About this deal

Unfortunately these do not indicate whether a species is a resident or migrant, but this is a considerable advance on Stiles and Skutch which had no maps and gave range descriptions which required a good knowledge of the country. This is the one field guide the novice or experienced birder needs for identifying birds in the field in the diverse habitats found in Costa Rica. If you are interested in contributing a book review, or if there is a book you would like to see reviewed on our site, you can contact our Book Review Editor, Evan Jackson at evan. This is a good and brand new (May 2023) field guide but not necessarily superior to the older (2014) book by other authors that we also recommend for Costa Rica at our “ recommended field guides blog”.

The genuine pocket size allows the books to be carried around on trips and excursions and will take up minimal rucksack and suitcase space. Costa Rica supports eight endemic bird species (although three of them are only on the rarely visited Cocos island, some 330 miles away by boat). Anyway we managed to identify most of the fantastic birds we saw whilst on holiday but it was good to be able to name the few that we couldn't when the book arrived.o Concise text that describes key field marks for positive identification, as well as habitat, behavior, and vocalizations. The illustrations by Dale Dyer are excellent overall, showing great attention to detail and artistry in depicting key identification marks while making the representations feel dynamic and lifelike.

The detailed full-color illustrations show identifying features―including plumage differences among males, females, and juveniles―and views of birds in flight wherever pertinent. Now this one I know I left a comment as I asked you where I could find out about Bird tours in Costa Rica! If you have a keen interest in biology, and the relationships in nature, the Neotropical Companion is a fascinating read. Reading this book will give you a deeper appreciation and understanding of the world around you as you trek through the cloud forests of Monteverde or the lush tropical rainforest of the Osa Peninsula. In April 2000, he published the first quarterly online Gone Birding Newsletter and has been keeping readers up-to-date on rare birdsightings, new distributional records, and other pertinent local birding news ever since.

Wish I had bought this before I took the trip to Costa Rica, rather than the much-inferior one i unwisely bought. Two obvious examples are the Clapper Rail and the Nutting’s Flycatcher, which are both likely to be different species. Illustrated with clear colour photography and brief but authoritative descriptions the Pocket Photo Guides highlight the species of birds and animals from each region that the traveller is most likely to see, as well as those that are genuinely endemic (only to be seen in that country or region) or special rarities. This is exactly the focus of The Birds of Costa Rica ―to assist with identification in the field―and the book succeeds admirably.
