[ citation needed] In religion [ edit ] There are several limitations in the assessment of the potential contribution of diet supplements as anticancer agents in vivo, owing to the high heterogenity regarding the clinical course and the underlying signaling of the various types of cancer along with the common co-administration of cytotoxic drugs. On the other hand, the use of food-related components as an add-on weapon to specific types of cancer attracts substantial scientific interest, aiming to enhance the efficacy and the reduce toxicity of conventional treatments.

Herbal and plant therapy in patients with inflammatory bowel disease. Acidic saliva, Mutans streptococci bacterium, and Lactobacilli bacterium can lead to cavities. Researchers found that all three types of gum reduced the level of Mutans streptococci. Lactobacilli levels were slightly raised in the groups using pure and xylitol mastic gums. However, Lactobacilli levels significantly decreased in the group using probiotic mastic gum. Balan, K.V.; Demetzos, C.; Prince, J.; Dimas, K.; Cladaras, M.; Han, Z.; Wyche, J.H.; Pantazis, P. Physical activity has also been shown to affect lipid metabolism. Sakamoto et al. [ 28] reported that aerobic and continuous exercise regimes are needed to improve lipid metabolism. Holloszy et al. [ 29] showed that after 6months of training, 15 male subjects (who did not exercise at all prior to the study) showed a reduction in TG from 208 to 125mg/dL. Physical activity may thus have contributed to the reduction in TG shown by M+PA in the present study. However, there did not appear to be any significant additional benefit of physical activity, with no differences in TG observed between M+PA and M.After fasting (overnight for at least 12h) and avoiding physical activity for 24h, venous blood samples were taken from the antecubital vein. Blood samples for serum were immobilized for 30min at room temperature and centrifuged at 4°C, and those for plasma were immediately centrifuged after collection. Serum and plasma samples were stored at −80°C until analysis. The following were measured: blood lipid markers [TC, LDL-C, HDL-C, triglycerides (TG), and lecithin–cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT)], insulin resistance (glucose, insulin), and hepatic function (SGOT, SGPT, and γ-GTP). Serum TC concentration was determined by timed endpoint enzyme colorimetry with the cholesterol dehydrogenase-ultraviolet method. Serum HDL-C and LDL-C concentrations were assayed by the timed endpoint direct method. Serum TG were estimated according to timed endpoint enzyme colorimetry with the GK-GPO glycerol blanked method. Serum LCAT was measured by the dipalmitoyl lecithin substrate method. Fasting blood glucose was quantitated by hexokinase ultraviolet absorption spectrophotometry. And serum insulin was measured by a chemiluminescent enzyme immunoassay. The homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) was calculated as follows: HOMA-IR=fasting insulin (μU/mL)×fasting blood glucose level (mg/dL)/405. SGOT, SGPT, and γ-GTP concentrations were measured by the method recommended by the JSCC. Researchers in a small 2014 study looked at the effect of three types of mastic gum on both the pH and bacteria level found in saliva. Depending on their group, participants chewed pure mastic gum, xylitol mastic gum, or probiotic gum three times daily for three weeks. There are only specific reports of possible side effects of mastic originating from animal studies. High doses of mastic may induce renal histological alterations in rats while displaying cytotoxic effects on specific cell series [ 57]. A dose-related increase in liver weights along with unfavorable changes in several hematological and biochemical parameters was observed in rats treated with high doses of mastic for 13 weeks [ 58]. Investigating the modifying effects of mastic on rat liver carcinogenesis, another study reported an increase in parameters related to the formation of hepatic preneoplastic lesions after mastic administration in cancer bioassay models [ 59]. On the contrary, mastic showed an antihepatotoxic activity in carbon tetrachloride-intoxicated rats leading to a reduction in bilirubin levels and in the activity of alkaline phosphatase [ 60]. However, people should always ask a doctor before using mastic or any other natural supplements. Previous studies on humans suggest that the effects of CMG on glucose metabolism may be dose dependent. For instance, Triantafyllou et al. [ 12] showed that for Greek male subjects, ingestion of a low daily CMG dose resulted in decreased glucose levels, whereas a high daily dose (5g CMG/day, i.e. the same dose as the present study) did not affect glucose levels. In the aforementioned study of 179 healthy Greek male subjects, Kartalis et al. [ 19] showed that glucose levels were reduced in the group that received the relatively low daily dose of 1g CMG. Conversely, in diabetic mice, both low and high doses of mastic powder (fed for 8weeks) substantially reduced blood glucose levels [ 18]. Another study of 60 people with IBD found that those who took mastic gum had significant improvements in their IBD markers after 3 months. The people in the study took 2.8 g of mastic per day.
