About this deal

The electronics are housed in a robust metal chassis with a balanced female XLR input and a balanced male XLR output, rugged enough for use at home, in the studio or on tour. With time, podcasters, YouTubers and online personalities started to upgrade their gear and moved from USB mics to standard XLR microphones, the ones that need an audio interface to work. Cloudlifter is known to power the ribbon and dynamic mics and you won’t have to install a USB interface. When you add a mic activator or outboard preamp into the mix though, you can get a lot more clean gain meaning that the preamp on your interface can be turned down to a really low level, getting rid of a lot of the noise as a result.

I didn’t want to go with the cheapest option, which had a few negative reviews, but FetHead definitely worth the money, and it is more than twice cheaper as the original Cloudlifter. Last but not least, the FetHead also provides an uncomplicated solution in live situations where the microphone preamp that is to be used produces too much noise once a certain gain level is exceeded – a common occurrence for bands and artists who have to adapt to different conditions from one night to the next, mike up quiet instruments, and feed the signal into mixing boards of varying quality. I use this with my Shure Sm7b, whoa that girl is gain hungry, but the Fethead handles it like a boss, be it connected to my audio interface or straight into the mic, it really doesn't matter it feeds that mic with the gain it needs. Even though your SM7B doesn’t need extra power, you need your phantom power when you connect it to FetHead.I can barely hear the Noise Gate activation with the Fethead attached, however the EIN floor is -130 dBu with the Fethead, as opposed to the Rodecaster Pro EIN of -125 dBu. One thing to remember is that these gain boosters need phantom power, just like condenser microphones. With all 3 mic activators / inline preamps, I found that the interference was less noticeable with the inline preamp close to the mic while the interference become more apparent when the mic activator was near the audio interface after the 15-foot cable run. All of our products are new unless stated and come with a 30-day money-back guarantee and a 3-year warranty as standard.

While there is no doubt that external factors also play a part in the frequency response (the microphone, speaker, room acoustics, etc) the differences between the two when used in the same test conditions still serves as a good indication of signal coloration. Dynamic uses a voice coil and magnet, and it is a plug and play microphone; they don’t need external power to run. In particular, you can only use it with the mic that has phantom power but it can block the phantom power from passing through the mic, making it safer to use. Given this high-end build, it can work in multi-room studios, auditoriums, and large recording rooms, even if the cables are long. The musicians need to be extremely particular about the audio experience because the audience won’t bear the distortion and extra-loud music. FetHead and Cloudlifter are two amazing mic preamplifiers available for musicians and both of them have significant features that you need to know about! If you are less concerned about coloration and are looking for a product that can prescribe gain based on what your mic needs, then the CL-1 is the activator for you. There are several actions that could trigger this block including submitting a certain word or phrase, a SQL command or malformed data. Whereas if you’re a band director or live podcaster who performs in spacious auditoriums, the ability to place a Cloudlifter along the chain to reduce noise and boost your noise floor is invaluable.

Please give us the reason for your assessment in the following text box and – if possible – your e-mail address for further questions. It tends to boost the audio signals at the source, which means the longer cable run will not sap the vitality of the signals. It can be used for recording in rooms with harder surfaces and higher ceilings (such rooms have challenged acoustics). There are multiple models in the range but we’ll be looking at the original single channel CL-1 as all the alternatives we’ll cover are also single channel.

It boosts the signal transparently and cleanly, and you don’t have to drive your input gain to the top. If you can handle a little extra noise in your recordings then the FetHead is the obvious choice, with its ultra-transparent high gain signal boost.
