Editors’ Tom Smith: ‘You can have 20-year-olds put under Editors’ Tom Smith: ‘You can have 20-year-olds put under

Now, did my 14 to 17 year-old self really believe for a minute that any of these "letters" or "true" articles were anything more than fantasy? Smith's vocal style has been compared to that of post-punk singers such as Ian Curtis, Paul Banks, Robert Smith, and Michael Stipe. In fact, Chambers is exquisite at those strained but still loving family relationships both here and in Small Pleasures– Jean Swinney and her mother were a wonderfully realised pair, as were Christopher and both Gerald and Carol. This was so different to the characters of Small Pleasures, so desperate not to act in a way which was “shabby” to one another and possibly a reflection of the time period – my recollection of the 1980s was that is lauded self-interest above self-sacrifice, perhaps. It was about a guy picking up a girl poolside at a resort hotel - when he gets her upstairs in her room, she asks him to whip her with a whip she has handily provided. The wife who had to wear childish clothes and present her husband with a paddle for her spanking after dinner when she had disobeyed him.

The secondary characters, Gerald and Carol, and Christopher’s relationships with them – some of the dialogue between them was wonderfully judged! Smith is 41 now, with sons aged 14 and nine and a house in the countryside (his wife, Edith Bowman, is a well-known TV presenter and journalist in the UK). Chambers published eight novels over 20 years but, as she told the Evening Standard, “They never really hit the big time at all.Eventually we are introduced to Alex Canning, investigating the life of Owen Goddard, the editor of the title, with whom Christopher was acquainted twenty years previously when he was writing his novel after quitting university. Magazine letters, which thankfully I have discovered in abundance in the Spanking Library (and keep them coming! He does seem a rather resilient fellow, taking all these vicissitudes in his strides – although some of them were some distance in the past, to be fair – and fills his days with walking, riding, fishing and entertaining his ex-wife with whom he has managed to maintain a close friendship.

Also at this time, the magazine began to run some "true" articles from women who described their upbringing or their current lives, always involving a healthy dose of spanking. I, of course, secreted these columns away in a special hiding place, because I assumed that these letters were the only spanking literature that existed in the universe. It was very electronic, but I feel like the last record had to be a guitar record to prove to ourselves that we could be a band," [6] says Smith. The use of the manuscript to narrate the love affair did not, to my mind, work as well as it could have!Christopher’s life has so far been rather short of charm – growing up in an unlovely suburb, with unambitious parents and a semi-vagrant brother – and he is captivated by his generous and cultured mentors. Chambers moves further back in time for this novel which roused readers and critics in 2020 with its compassionate portrayal of isolated people who were the victim of the times they lived in, with Jean’s list of small pleasures becoming as much of a favourite passage as the Cool Girl monologue in Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn.

Memories of Mr. Magazine Wellred Weekly: Vol. 2, No. 1 - Memories of Mr. Magazine

Nothing particularly attractive about it, but then I noticed the cover advertised a story with a name something along the lines of "She Loved the Whip". When Smith lost his voice during the 2006 SXSW concert, the band had to cancel the last song of their first gig. With similar acclaim coming Chambers’ way, it’s a delightful result all round, both for her and the lucky reader who has plenty to catch up on, some suggestions of which follow here. Small Pleasures, her first novel in a decade and inspired by a news story she had heard on Radio 4 in the early 2000s, placed her firmly in the limelight and brought an army of fans asking for more – which, happily, has led to beautiful new reissues for her previous novels which are being published from now through the autumn like the rather wonderful bookish equivalent of summer fruits. Characters that leap off the page, dry humour, intelligence, the odd last-act twist, and the feeling of being led by the hand by an author who knows exactly what they’re doing.
