About this deal

Get a handle on the true feminine mystique--the one designed by God, who champions women. You'll find all the keys to perfecting the art of being a woman, including... I know that Beth Moore puts a lot of work into these studies, & this one is no exception. As informative & uplifting as her video lessons are, sometimes I have a hard time getting past many of her personal quirks & nuances. For one thing, I feel like she's yelling at me in some segments or just preaching over my head in others, while maybe others (Priscilla Shirer, etc) might teach in my style of learning. Not to mention that a lot of it is directed at me using "pet-names" that my mom doesn't even use ("Girlfriend", "Beloved", "Darling", "Sweetie", "Honey", "Dear One", etc). It's easier for me to get past those overpowering nuances while reading her, rather than watching her. But that still doesn't shake the pet-names. I read George's book Beautiful in God's Eyes and appreciated how empowering it was because of how it celebrating the many aspects of being a Christian woman. Unfortunately, this book is just like the stereotypical Stepford wife/shut up and look pretty image of a Christian woman. When I told my husband about the book, he thought it sounded terrible. I couldn't even finish it. What’s especially intriguing about the writing is you’ll begin a chapter on one thing and then take a detour to somewhere equally fascinating. The section on menstruation (“I Start Bleeding!”), for instance, soon becomes a hilarious and refreshingly honest look at her sexual awakening, via Jilly Cooper novels, Chevy Chase movies (!!!) and the complete oeuvre of Jenny Agutter. That, in turn, leads to an intelligent and passionate discussion about porn. Rosemary’s unhappy family has a secret. It’s a secret that we can’t spoil for you, but one that illuminates and transforms Karen Joy Fowler’s We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves . It’s a twist no one sees coming, but which colors the story with a new understanding. With its sensitive and honest portrayal of family and loss, you’ll be thinking about this novel long after you finish reading it! 48. Saltwater by Jessica Andrews

Finally as a coup de grâce, let me mention the jokey correlation forged between the shrinking nature of female underwear through the years and the gradual break up of the Empire. It was at this point that I realized the publishers should have specifically stated on the blurb that Moran's brand of feminism/humour is not directed at former colonies or women of colour. Alison Bechdel’s Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic is a dazzlingly honest graphic memoir about Bechdel’s teenage relationship to her father and her process of coming out — and it’s the book behind the Tony-award-winning musical of the same name! Among beautiful Gothic illustrations emerges a narrative about figuring out who you are, as Alison learns more about her own sexual orientation and that of her father, who remains an elusive figure. For Girls/Young Women 57. She Speaks: Women's Speeches That Changed the World, from Boudica to Greta by Yvette CooperIncreasingly we believe the world needs more meaningful, real-life connections between curious travellers keen to explore the world in a more responsible way. That is why we have intensively curated a collection of premium small-group trips as an invitation to meet and connect with new, like-minded people for once-in-a-lifetime experiences in three categories: Culture Trips, Rail Trips and Private Trips. Our Trips are suitable for both solo travelers, couples and friends who want to explore the world together. There were some historical and cultural insights offered that I did find interesting. For example the part about the time line of this story in relation to the Jewish calendar year. Sally Rooney’s hugely successful Normal People (recently adapted into a much-hyped TV show) focuses on the love story between two young Irish students, Marianne and Connell. Tender, intimate, and impressively minimal, it charts their strange but unique relationship as they move from rural Ireland to Dublin. Normal People chronicles a special connection between two people, but is also a story that captures the most relatable elements of contemporary young love and the power of finding ourselves in others. 42. The Penelopiad by Margaret Atwood

Women can do anything. Of course, historically speaking, that hasn’t always been the message we encounter in the media or popular culture. But today, there’s never been a better time to be looking for inspirational books for women, as the literary world is now spoiled for choice when it comes to stories of women’s bravery, grit, resilience, humor, and drive. By Week 5, I realized with horror that I was no Esther! In fact, if it was not for the grace of God, my pride may have plotted all sorts of evil just like Haman. This study challenged me to stare my pride in the face and say, "Die already!" Just like Haman, I thought I deserved so many things, things that I haven't received, if for no other reason, because it would be my god instead of The One True God.Super torn on this one. There is a lot of really good practical applications for Christian women. But it also seemed very "do these things and you'll win at being a Christian." I think her ideas were good and helpful, but I think she didn't show enough of the struggle. So her readers are left with the impression that if they're having trouble they just aren't working hard enough. Culture Trip launched in 2011 with a simple yet passionate mission: to inspire people to go beyond their boundaries and experience what makes a place, its people and its culture special and meaningful — and this is still in our DNA today. We are proud that, for more than a decade, millions like you have trusted our award-winning recommendations by people who deeply understand what makes certain places and communities so special. This is a gloriously funny, witty memoir that will have you snorting with laughter within 5 mins. Let's be honest it is not going to become a academic tome of feminist philosophy but underneath all the jokes is a 'short, sharp feminist agenda'. Be happy in yourself and women stop falling for the lies the world tells us about what it is to be a woman - and as a result, start having a good time. ENDOV!! Well it turns out she is quite a big deal in the UK, where she wrote a novel at 15, became a music journalist for the weekly Melody Maker at 16 and briefly hosted a Channel 4 pop culture show called Naked City at 18 before embarking on a long career as a TV critic and satirical columnist for The Times.

No billionaire heiresses are ever abducted and raped and murdered, because they are just being put into a taxi or have their driver waiting around a corner for them. Nothing can stop Shonda Rhimes. The creative force behind Grey's Anatomy , Scandal , and How to Get Away with Murder is always charging headfirst into her next project, producing so many series that soon enough she’ll basically own TV. But even Shonda Rhimes isn’t totally fearless. In Year of Yes , Rhimes faces a yearlong challenge from her sister to try to say yes to the unexpected opportunities that come her way. Leaving room for the unplanned, opening up beyond her comfort zone, and simply saying yes to what the world has to offer makes anything seem possible. 4. The Gifts of Imperfection by Brené Brown Yes, I may have a lot of privilege, enough that I was able to take an "Introduction to Women's Studies" course last year at my university.Slow Food ( http://www.slowfoodusa.org/) also inspired by another awesome book I'm reading - Notes from a Blue Bike: The Art of Living Intentionally in a Chaotic World - more on that later! In this magical realist novel, Isabel Allende spans several generations of the same Latin-American family, but focuses on protagonist Clara. In the tradition of Gabriel García Márquez, this is an epic book full of life and events, where everything happens in an endless stream of dramatic family developments — which sounds like a lot, but you’ll be hooked. Widely considered to be Allende’s finest novel, The House of the Spirits is a riveting read that will leave you feeling that you’ve stepped into a whole new world full of magical women. 55. The Yellow Wallpaper and Other Stories by Charlotte Perkins Gilman M: Like the fact that you’ve written about your abortion and things like that: you just can’t just go on The View and chat about that, can you. Culture Trips are deeply immersive 5 to 16 days itineraries, that combine authentic local experiences, exciting activities and 4-5* accommodation to look forward to at the end of each day. This Pulitzer-winning short story collection is disarmingly honest and moving in its careful simplicity. Interpreter of Maladies focuses on the lives of Indian-American characters in the USA, as well as Indian characters in Calcutta. Immersive and filled with rich cultural detail, these stories sensitively explore the challenges of romantic relationships, immigration, as well as being away from home in remarkable and lucid prose. If you’ve ever spent time away from your home or family, this masterful collection will make you feel heard. 51. Beloved by Toni Morrison These aren't the only casually distasteful and problematic jokes Moran makes but these two stood out in my mind as particularly offensive. Since Moran takes a lot of time to discuss the harmful nature of the word 'fat', one would think she'd understand the damaging power of the R word and such ableist/transphobic language.

While it’s impossible to capture the nuances and richness of the female experience, the following 10 books present unique, moving portraits of being a woman.

I further felt that the tone and the target audience were definitely aimed at a woman much different from me. As such, I had a hard time connecting to her.
