About this deal

An alien on earth is news and the Spaceboy even makes it to The White House to meet a rotund President with an orange face who may or may not seem familiar to many readers.

A helter skelter chase follows on ostrich back and more with all of Walliam’s sound effects decorating the text.

Schock has built 25 rockets that have all crashed, but Ruth immediately realises that his brand-new rocket needs a pointy –not round– head. During a Welcome-to-Planet-Earth film made by the military, Yuri jumps at the image of a cat on the screen.

It introduces us to a daredevil girl who is a science nerd and not afraid to stand up for herself or her friends. Lots of toilet humour, bottoms, trumps etc which Walliams relies on for humour over smart dialogue or a clever plot, quite the opposite to his hero Roald Dahl's approach. This one did have Roald Dahl vibes with the orphaned children and nasty relatives, and of course we have the token bad guy. A new illustrator with a slightly different style, but any reader will still recognise Walliams' famed characters and writing style. As soon as Ruth rescues Spaceboy from the flaming flying saucer, helicopters piloted by faceless figures fly above the farm, trying to catch the alien. However, when the soldier announces that they are flying to meet the President, the situation seems to be getting out of control. The book is a chapter book but it is equally also a picture book as half of the content is illustrative. As always, Walliams’ text, in combination with illustrations by Adam Stower, is both heartwarming and hilarious, perfect reading material for readers of eight years and older. It's always the same with the whole flying saucer crashing in a cornfield- But I don't get why the whole twist was added: to me, it just ruined the whole story.

The story itself was both fun and wacky as well as being educational as it was based on real events. David Walliams is a literary phenomenon whose books have sold more than 50 million copies worldwide and have been translated into fifty-five languages. At times I felt like I was reading Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator, but Walliams definitely has his own signature on his work and Dahl, while clearly a strong influence, is not channelled. She spends her days reading comics about alien invasions, doodling UFOs and gazing at the stars through her old, battered telescope.
