About this deal

This is a tough structure that provides external protection to the sensitive sole underneath. It is slightly concave and is not weight bearing. When a horse suffers from impaired blood supply to the network of capillaries which provide the nourishment that enables hoof horn to be produced, the result is that the hoof horn produced at this time is weaker, less dense, and more susceptible to infection 4, 9, 10. Combine this with the large number of dead horn cells within the inner wall, blood products which have leached into the horn from the damaged laminae and the additional heat from an inflamed hoof and you have a perfect environment for White Line Disease.

Feed 500g of Healthy Hooves per 100kg of your horse's bodyweight. Fibre weighs very little compared to mixes or cubes. It is important to weigh your scoop to ensure that you are feeding the correct amount. A large Stubbs scoop holds approxiamtely 500grams. How To Get The Most Out Of Feeding Healthy Hooves a b Stubbs, George (1976). The Anatomy of The Horse (1sted.). Dover Publications INC. New York. pp.39, 71–72. ISBN 0-486-23402-9. Ag-Agele, R. et al., (2019) The Anatomy, Histology and Physiology of the Healthy and Lame Equine Hoof. This is the exterior part of the hoof that can be seen and encases the internal structures offering a hard layer of protection. The material which makes up the hoof wall is keratin-based, which is also known as ‘horn’. Keratin is a protein and is the same material which makes up human hair and fingernails. It takes approximately 9-12 months for the horn to grow from the coronary band to the toe 1. The hoof wall should be smooth in appearance, with no obvious dips, grooves, lines or bulges. Call the vet, as the infection (pus) should be released from the foot by digging out the infected area. This can also be done by a farrier. The horse will be sound or at least almost sound after this procedure. Horses and ponies with brittle or crumbly hooves need to stay on TopSpec Healthy Hoof permanently. We do not recommend reducing the level of supplementation once good hoof quality has been achieved, as there is a significant risk that hoof quality will deteriorate without continuous nutritional support. At 15mg/500kg per day, TopSpec Healthy Hoof contains the clinically proven levels of Biotin that improve hoof quality, boosted with Zinc, Copper, Iodine, Vitamin A and Methionine, all shown to increase the effectiveness of Biotin. This supplement includes biotin, plus a broad range of micronutrients that improve the efficiency of the hoof supplement.

TURNER, T. A. (1998), White line disease. Equine Veterinary Education, 10: 73–76. doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3292.1998.tb01785.x Great care must be taken when selecting a farrier, so ask your vet for recommendations. Correct trimming and shoeing is vital to the horse’s welfare, and any mistakes can lead to serious, lasting damage. This supplement contains high levels of biotin, as well as methionine and cysteine to provide extra support in the spring months when hooves are exposed to a range of weathers.INGREDIENTS: Cereal straw treated (oat & wheat, sodium), Cereal straw (oat & wheat), Lucerne (alfalfa), Sunflower seed meal dehulled, Cane molasses and soya oil (from genetically modified soya) blend, Oatfeed, Wheatfeed, Rice bran, Calcium carbonate, Rapeseed oil, Molasses, Magnesium oxide, Sodium chloride (salt), Garlic. Hooves are a plastic structure and their time-related, very complex changes can be considered in the short term (days/weeks) and over the horse's lifespan.

This is caused by puncture wounds, seedy toe, or bruising. It is the most common reason for lameness. The hoof mechanism ensures effective blood circulation into the hoof, and it aids general circulation.

The medial or both hairlines can be marked with barium/wire. Marking both hairlines can help to show imbalance (if the markers are placed and remain exactly along the hairline). Feed as much forage as they will eat or a minimum of 7.5kg of hay or 9-11kg of haylage per day based on no grazing When a foot is out of balance, or a biomechanical issue in the horse’s body is causing it to twist a foot or significantly weight one side of the foot over another, this can cause sufficient mechanical stress to apply a shearing force to the layers of hoof wall. This creates small defects at the ground bearing surface of the wall which can begin to harbour infection. Obviously imbalances can be corrected with careful trimming, but biomechanical imbalances may need to be corrected by a good equine bodyworker to reduce or eliminate the shearing action and allow the infection to grow out. Sometimes the stresses placed on the wall are from poor conformation or joint problems such as arthritis, in which case the condition will just have to be managed with a combination of careful trimming and good hoof hygiene. Mechanical stress can also include holes made by nails in shod horses. These not only harbour bacteria, but because the hoof wall flexes around the nail, this creates additional damage which allows bugs to enter the hoof wall.
