About this deal

These anniversary editions of the classic texts of Enid Blyton's best-known series benefit the House of Illustration, the world's first dedicated home for the art of illustration.

I remain convinced Enid Blyton secretly wanted to be a food critic, as food was as much a character as anyone. Jennifer Armstrong and her family are never mentioned, although the Sticks kidnap George and Dick before Julian and Anne rescue them. This is possibly something to do with the fact that Blyton would have been writing during the height of rationing (the first edition was published in August 1944) and these were foods that were probably being missed from the war time diet.

Enid Blyton's stories are read and loved by millions of children (and grown-ups) all over the world.

As a child it was because the Sticks were the bad guys and the good guys were allowed to be mean to them as the baddies were mean first (I hope that makes sense). Developed countries love to jack up tariffs so that poorer countries don't have an unfair advantage in being able to produce cheaper goods, however my argument is that they tend to hurt the consuming public more. Fantastic new cover art by Laura Ellen Anderson will draw young readers into this accessible timeless classic. This is one of Blyton’s humorous books just like “Mystery of the Missing Man” and “The Circus of Adventure” (the Gus scenes before his abduction). Most of us have already done our best at answering our kids’ questions about death, I don’t see why Hollywood wants to keep reminding them! Born in South London, Blyton was the eldest of three children, and showed an early interest in music and reading. The short chapters are filled with descriptions of food, glorious loaves of bread, ginger beer, tinned pineapples and peaches in sweet juice, sardines, roast chickens, fresh tomatoes, jam tarts, meat pies and treacle tarts. Hopefully there’ll be more of the latter and less lording it over the servants in future adventures.

It is suggested that this seven year old girl is not alone in not understanding the concept of custom duties because I suspect that 90% of the population does not understand custom duties, and the 10% who do are probably benefiting financially from them. There isn't anything I didn't really like but I liked when the children made echoes to scare the Sticks away and when they got a reward from the police. He has never picked up that old fashioned language in his day-to-day talk, though I wondered if he would. Stick repeatedly tries to poison George's dog Timmy, prompting George to hatch a secret plan to run away to Kirrin Island. One would be the ages, all the children are described as being a year older than they were in Five on a Treasure Island. From the off, when Julian, Dick, and Anne arrive and we are introduced to Mrs Stick, we know she has to be a baddie.
