About this deal

The beyerdynamic DT 880 are first-class open dynamic headphones, and sell at a bargain price. They come in many different versions at different prices, and all sound the same. Also, i think its comforting to know these headphones are made in Germany (Deutsche gründlichkeit!) and the build seems to be very good. (They feel very sturdy and luxurious)

The original 1988 DT990 is much more muffled, but the old DT990 has sparklier (smoothly boosted) highs.DT 880's have an outstanding soundstage, the 3D imaging surpasses the others in my test, width and depth and even height is revealed in a very pleasing mannor. I heard details i didn't know were there. I auditioned these with various amplifiers, and the sound didn't vary — just the maximum output, which of course will vary the perceived bass response.

The DT 880's neutral spectral balance is from the professional monitoring market, and less like boosted home hi-fi headphones. The DT 880s are dry and neutral, not warm unless something was recorded that way. A proper headphone amp should be able drive these to about 7 V RMS or 20 dBm or 100 mW into 600 Ω, which is more than deafening. The coiled cable is permanently fixed to the left driver. I prefer single sided cables for one reason, it's another easy way to tell which side is which in the dark. The cable is about 5ft in length, up to 10ft when stretched out. It is terminated to 3.5mm with a screw on 6.5mm adapter included. The cable is not replaceable but it is securely fixed and durable. As an owner of other headphones with replaceable cables, I think the feature is overrated. Connectors not only wear out, but can sometimes affect sound when moving around or not securely fastened. I have yet to replace a cable on any headphone. If you need more length or you're afraid of damaging the cable, use a headphone extension cord. I really don't see a "need" for a replaceable cable. Unless you plan to go portable with this headphone, in which case there are much better options for that purpose. Every other part can be replaced on this headphone, including the drivers themselves. Finding parts is easy because of their long-standing popularity. This is a big plus for working professionals who are more likely to abuse their gear. You can use the 32Ω version with high-performance equipment; its sound is the same, and if you have a great headphone amplifier like the Benchmark DAC1 HDR, its performance won't be degraded by the lower impedance. However, most headphone amplifiers perform better with higher impedance headphones, and that is why beyerdynamic suggests them.

What should you get instead of the Beyerdynamic DT 880 PRO?

The Sound stage has more depth then width from my experience, & has a un canny ability to project sound in front of you, while at the same time projecting a very convincing out of 3D imaging that can actually cover my room.. But not in the 4 corner sense, but in the triangle sense. I never had this experience with a headphone before.

The 32 Ω version is the most sensitive, however with the lowest impedance, will be more likely to excite slightly more measured distortion.

Bass - The bass is punchy, and reasonably well defined. It extends well - but doesn't seem to quite get right down to the sub-bass. There is a slight emphasis on the mid-bass which contributes to the U frequency, but overall the bass is well presented as long as it is driven properly. After a friend lend me his Sennheiser HD25 II's, i was impressed with the amount of detail and clarity they gave.
