About this deal

Through some wildly improbable circumstances, Jenny, Kevin, Ole and Hugo all come together to form a ragtag crew of heroes — think Leia, Luke, Yoda and Han Solo and you won’t be far off — out to take down the racist and misogynist evil empire that lay at the heart of Victor’s darkest dreams. Ernsthaft?

Review: Sweet Sweet Revenge Ltd by Jonas Jonasson Review: Sweet Sweet Revenge Ltd by Jonas Jonasson

The brand-new adventure from the beloved author of The Hundred Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared. Hi there! My name is Beatrice and I am an Italian bookworm who loves to read in English. I started Book for Thought in 2014 as a space to record my thoughts on books I read and be a part of the wonderful online book community.Jonas Jonasson’s books are just different. You can tell from just the title of his first novel, “The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out The Window And Disappeared,” a book that has sold millions of copies worldwide. Jonas Jonasson certainly seem to take pleasure in writing farces, comedy of errors that happen to somehow work out. Kevin and Jenny get their revenge on the cynical, opportunist Victor – who has no redeeming character at all. I enjoyed the fact that the young couple was assisted by the owner of Sweet Sweet Revenge, Ltd. A man who, like Victor, has little redeeming qualities except that his not a fascist. It’s an elegant way of saying in one sentence what Great Britain did without sounding too much like a teacher. I’m always happy if you can see a serious message in the one-liner. Normally comedies have at least a coherent structure around which the madness can orientate itself, but its plot felt completely ad hoc and cobbled together. All through the book, I had the overwhelming sense that he created a formula with that book and was hoping to replicate it with this one.

Sweet Sweet Revenge Ltd.: The latest hilarious feel-good

If you don’t know how to plot revenge in a good way, just let literature inspire you. Here are my best tips on how you can learn to become a worse person. It is certainly a comedy (loosely speaking) of errors from start to finish. Featuring the most (literally as there is FAR too many of them) eccentric and outrageous cast of characters -who I’m sorry, some opinions were utterly abhorrent, making it extremely hard to invest in them (Tw/ mild racism and homophobia) which even if this was their ‘personality’ or the writers intention, was nevertheless extremely uncomfortable to read. They say an elephant never forgets. The same goes for the self-proclaimed count in Dumas’ classic adventure novel. Revenge is rarely as beautiful as when the practitioner is not in a hurry. Edmond Dantès waited 24 years. In my new novel, one of the main characters fantasises about planting a hedge next to his neighbour’s plot, with the intention of letting it to grow until it obscures the sun for the neighbour’s carrot bed. He’d have to wait 500 years, but all good things comes to those who wait. This is quite possibly the most long winded, convoluted, mumbo jumbo I’ve read this year so far! And that’s coming from me, the ever rambling female Adam Buxton -she wishes.Cattle (cows and goats), clubs (the fighting kind) and jam. Three items which often appear in this book :-P In the first chapters of Sweet Sweet Revenge Ltd there’s enough plot for several novels… Jonas Jonasson, best known for The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared, is a wildly inventive writer, often funny, who stuffs his bonkers but entertaining story with art, politics and romance, and a tongue-incheek meditation on the philosophy of getting even. Great fun.’ The Times A pleasant and poignant book, through its comical story line it touches and satirises many important themes. The plot is of course based on impossibilities, coincidences and farsical misunderstandings and doesn't stand any serious scrutinity. I liked the story and the humor but I felt that often the pace is uneven.

Sweet Sweet Revenge Ltd. (Paperback) - AbeBooks

I thought this book was uproariously funny and enjoyed its laugh-out-loud moments. However, it was longer than it needed to be. An added bonus was learning about some leading artists that were unknown to me. The comedy connects some diverse characters in a surprising way. The story is set mainly in Sweden.

Ratings:

The protagonist Raskolnikov is reasoning with himself. If he kills the terrible pawnbroker who torments so many, he would do the world a favour, in the name of humanity. At the same time, Raskolnikov himself happens to be one of the indebted people whose finances suddenly improve with the demise of the pawnbroker. In an inner dialogue, he is torn between the conviction that he has acted righteously, and the alternative theory that he is in fact quite lousy. Put simply, Raskolnikov takes revenge on Raskolnikov. A masterful piece of literature! As he’s done in his previous novels, Jonas Jonasson acts as a travel guide through time, drops in a few lessons on colonialism and art history, and pokes fun at capitalism and the artworld, with plenty of laughs along the way.

Sweet, Sweet Revenge Ltd. by Jonas Jonasson | Goodreads Sweet, Sweet Revenge Ltd. by Jonas Jonasson | Goodreads

As he's done in his previous novels, Jonas Jonasson acts as a travel guide through time, drops in a few lessons on colonialism and art history, and pokes fun at capitalism and the art world, supplying plenty of laughs along the way. To summarise, this book is farcical in EVERY sense of the word. And unless you know and have read Jónasson’s work before, perhaps give it a miss. As a student of literature, I’d learnt many many years ago about the “willing suspension of disbelief” that enables appreciation and enjoyment of art, that is so often, a subjective expression.
