About this deal

The murder victim is Kirsty Emily Jackson—aged 37—who had been killed while camping solo, in her long-time favorite Swaledale, shortly after divorcing her violent spouse Daryl who had thereafter threatened to destroy her. My only niggle is the poor grammar when describing someone "stood" or "sat" for example when it should be standing or sitting. Here, Harry’s homicide investigation concerns renowned author Charlie Baker who—after postmortem rules out suicide—was seemingly shot dead shortly after his thriller book launch.

It always puzzles me why the crime books I found boring and could not finish garner such high ratings - always above 4, nearly 5. Detective Chief Inspector Harry Grimm is forced to take leave from Bristol’s Major Investigations Team when his boss, tired of Harry chasing the ghost of his murderous father, sends him north on secondment. The best thing that can be said is that it was mildly diverting for a couple of hours and required no intellectual input from the reader, which was what I needed at the time. The novel's setting, a northern Britain of both beauty and boredom, emerges as a character in its own right. It’s beautiful country, where the people are genuine and honest, the air is fresh, and Harry – in spite of himself – is beginning to enjoy himself. These factors prompted the backpacking Sophie to—after ransacking their house—run away unthinkingly and without any exit plan, particularly to hurt her mother.

This kicks off a chain of events you do not see coming, a clever storyline with enough twists and turns to make you dizzy. Also, somebody is rustling sheep in Wensleydale, and the father of one of Grimm’s team members is a victim. I'm from Yorkshire and I managed to contain my shock that people use wellies on farms in Somerset and that country people drive like country people.

Whichever you choose we hope you enjoy being part of your unique reading community – happy reading everyone! Maybe my perception has been altered by my religious intolerance, but I wasn’t entirely happy with this one.

The ending was also really tenuous, full of drama but taking leaps that I struggled to see connections between, which ruined it a bit for me.Then Grimm gets seconded for a quieter and peaceful location out of harm’s way set in the Yorkshire dales of Wensleydale. The nearby town of Askrig is the home of an internationally famous pop singer, Gareth Jones, who recorded “that Christmas song – you remember. Still, I'll give the next one a shot before writing the series off, after all, an editor might have been drafted in by book 2.
