About this deal

Stewart jokes that he almost began his memoir with the words “Once upon a time,” such is the fairytale nature of his life story. He also revealed that a book tour is in early development, where he expects to travel around promoting Making It So; more details are expected to become available closer to the book’s October release date.

Come down the travelators, exit Sainsbury's, turn right and follow the pedestrianised walkway to Crown Walk and turn right - and Coles will be right in front of you. Making It So: A Memoir will arrive this Autumn from Gallery Books, as both 432-page hardcover tome and an audiobook read by Patrick Stewart himself. The only quibble I *might* make is the lack of a list of the various dramatic productions, TV shows, and movies in which Sir Patrick has appeared.

I was also aware he had been a big deal in theatrical circles, even though I had never had an opportunity to attend a performance. For entertainment, he turned to one of four books his family owned: an ancient encyclopedia passed down by his grandfather, a couple of war volumes belonging to his father, and a large but tattered dictionary. I’m a huge Patrick Stewart fan - have been since I saw my first episode of TNG when I was a toddler - but this book was rough. His writing may not have the rugged truth of his best acting, but a wry, conversational charm sees it across the line.

Likewise, Jean-Luc Picard will always be my captain, and I would follow him to the end of the galaxy and back. So if you are on the fence about reading or, better yet, making the 18+ hour commitment to listening to this memoir I can only hope this silly review helps you decide which side to come down on.

Stewart left home at 17 – he had received a scholarship to attend the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School – and he never lived in Mirfield again.

By turns funny and thoughtful, Sir Patrick gives behind-the-scenes glimpses into his various experiences on stage and screen. Stewart has described previously the violent atmosphere in which he was raised – his father, Alf, a long-serving soldier, regularly beat his mother, Gladys, a mill worker, who in Making It So, Stewart’s new memoir, is depicted as beautiful and saintly and downtrodden. I have followed his career since from a respectful distance, and when I learned he was writing his memoir, I was over the moon with excitement. His voice comes through clearly in the writing, the conversational tone and bits of humor making for an enjoyable read that is unmistakably Patrick Stewart. About the Author: Sir Patrick Stewart is a distinguished stage and screen actor whose illustrious career spans six decades. It is amazing to read this book and find out (unsurprisingly) that Patrick Stewart is in many ways similar to the beloved TNG character he portrays. And I know that this seems like ‘show business’, like ‘entertainment’… But it’s much, much more than that. I expected far more focus on the later parts of his career (Star Trek and X-Men), but well over half the book is spent covering his early life and career as a Shakespearean actor, which I appreciated. Now, he presents his long-awaited memoir, MAKING IT SO, a revealing portrait of an artist whose astonishing life—from his humble beginnings in Yorkshire, England to the heights of Hollywood and worldwide acclaim—proves a story as exuberant, definitive, and enduring as the author himself. He did not become Picard until he was in his 40s, following 14 years at the Royal Shakespeare Company and several years at smaller repertory theatres across England.

Making It So | Book by Patrick Stewart, To Be Confirmed

His beloved screen work, known to audiences worldwide, includes his iconic portrayals of Star Trek's Jean-Luc Picard and X-Men's Professor Charles Xavier. Invaluably and particularly since I’ve come to live in the United States, where if you don’t have a therapist you’re weird.Sir Patrick Stewart is a distinguished stage and screen actor whose illustrious career spans six decades. The ceremony, which took place in California, was officiated by Sir Ian McKellen, a man Stewart “fell in love with” while they worked together on the X-Men films. As I listened to my classmates struggle, desperate to comprehend what was going on, I suddenly saw the name Shylock hurtling towards me on the page. This book is full of all of the plays he did which is before my time but I enjoyed his behind the scenes stories about doing the plays. It just gets worse and worse down to his extremely cringy interactions with the waitress in her 30s that he marries while he's in his 70s, after cheating on his previous wives.
