About this deal

But I digress and will now promptly run away from that list of my own personal recurring pet peeves for comics… Farewell, Brindavoine, by Tardi, translation by Jenna Allen, edited by Conrad Groth (Fantagraphics)

This was one where I though I knew where it was going but was surprised to see the rather clever and moving twists in it. This is a book that keeps you on your toes and keeps your mind working. It’s a lovely reminder that death doesn’t have to be such a gloomy concept and makes you think about outlooks that could create more death-positivity. This is such a fun book, it’ll make you laugh, it’ll blow your mind, and it’ll also hit you deeply in the feelings. My only minor complaint is the font is occasionally hard to read. The Many Deaths of Laila Starr is a complete gem of a graphic novel that reminds you ‘ like a cigarette, the point of life, my friends, is to be smoked.’ The concept is solid, steeped in theology, mythology, and contemplations of life and death. I especially enjoyed the way all of this was grounded in the goals, reactions, and desires of the book’s characters. It was in this way not entirely unlike one of my favorite comics of all time, Sandman. All that aside, however, it’s the execution and craft that really bring this comic to life…and gorgeously so. Death attempts to kill this baby, but nets a ghost child along the way who assists in deterring Death from killing the baby, and helps Death get away when chased from the building.

I'm sure this series would make a lot more sense and have a lot more meaning to me if I were more familiar with the culture and religion of the seeing and characters but I'm a bit lost.DC Comics. Studios. Ram V is an award-winning author and creator of comics and graphic novels such as Grafity’s Wall, These Savage Shores, and Blue in Green. Since publishing his first book in 2016, Ram’s work has gone on to garner critical and popular success and multiple awards. Apart from creating original work, since 2018, Ram has also written for iconic characters and titles at DC Comics and Marvel Entertainment.

Aside from this, I really enjoyed the story. It takes a goddess, and has her experience the mortal world, learning lessons along the way. She actually does become more human as time goes on. With humanity on the verge of discovering immortality, the avatar of Death is fired and relegated to the world below to live out her now-finite days in the body of twenty-something Laila Starr in Mumbai. The story: the god of death is let go by a corporation culture of gods. She becomes mortal at the same time a baby is born who is going to discover a cure for death. The story shows the two of them overlapping and interacting throughout their lives, and throughout the many deaths of the former god of death.

My Only Child, by Wang Ning and various, edited by Wang Saili, translation by Emma Massara (LICAF/Fanfare Presents) Pulp Empire: The Secret History of Comics Imperialism, by Paul S. Hirsch (University of Chicao Press) pensaba que todo eso ya lo había dejado atrás». La vida de la muerte Hakim’s Odyssey, Book 1: From Syria to Turkey, by Fabien Toulmé, translation by Hannah Chute (Graphic Mundi/Penn State University Press)

Studios today announced THE MANY DEATHS OF LAILA STARR, a new original series from acclaimed comics creator Ram V ( Swamp Thing, Blue in Green) and superstar artist Filipe Andrade ( Captain Marvel) that explores the fine line between living and dying in Mumbai through the lens of magical realism, available in April 2021. BOOM! Studios has announced today that THE MANY DEATHS OF LAILA STARR #1, the premiere issue in a new original series from acclaimed comics creator Ram V ( Swamp Thing, Blue in Green), superstar artist Filipe Andrade ( Captain Marvel), and letterer AndWorld Design, that explores the fine line between living and dying in Mumbai through the lens of magical realism, has sold out a second time at the distributor level! Historia de la muerte We still, however, would know that this was an ethereal story about reincarnation, birth and death, and persevering in the face of it all. Moreover, Andrade’s work is so enrapturing and expressive, that it feels wholly capable of entertaining throughout entirely on its own merits. There’s so much creativity and fascinating detail in each panel, all of it seemingly influenced by the story’s setting in Mumbai. The artwork also has a taut flow to it, feeling bouncy as it pulls the reader through the story’s paces at a brisk and jaunty speed.
