About this deal

A reclusive photography genius, known only as “Dmitry”, has proved to the world, by using some novel methods[1], that: smaller format cameras have a depth of field advantage over full-frame and larger format cameras. But it is bigger, and the difference is big enough that I can fit one more lens in my bag with the 45/2. It is easy to get sloppy with all of the benefits of the Olympus system, but you can't expect miracles in less than ideal situations. Shooting through window glass there was a bit of reflection, but the ability of the lens to resolve so much details, at such close up distance was incredible.

Closest focus is 19cm, which allows you to get reasonably close for frame filling shots, whilst providing a reasonable working distance at the same time. I’ve owned or used almost all of the MFT primes and I have to say that the 60mm macro is definitely near the top of the list in terms of image quality. With its compact and lightweight design, you can easily capture properly illuminated macro shots in any environment, even in the rain. This lens is splash- and dustproof, so you can take it outside during bad weather and get the shots you need. How to read our charts Chromatic aberration is the lens' inability to focus on the sensor or film all colours of visible light at the same point. Being a telemacro lens means that you get a reasonable working distance of about 10cm (4in) from the front element, even at maximum magnification (and quite a bit more when shooting at a reproduction ratio of 1:2 or 1:4). Normally, having just one lens option to choose from isn’t ideal – but here, it’s not an issue because the lens performs so well anyway. A lens of this length on a MFT body does feel a bit awkward, but handling characteristics aren’t bad especially if your camera has a decent grip.

ISO-200, handheld in-camera focusing stacking, full frame capture, subject distance 465 mm OM-D E-M1X + M. The photo below, which shows a close-up of a battered CompactFlash memory card, shows just how close you can get with a 1:1 macro lens on a Micro Four Thirds camera. Like most things photographic, it takes some time to experiment with new gear and technology before one can become reasonably proficient using it. If my review thus far has not demonstrated my enthusiasm clearly, I’ll make it extra clear: this lens is an incredible macro lens for Micro Four Thirds. If you want a compact camera that produces great quality photos without the hassle of changing lenses, there are plenty of choices available for every budget. As you can see in the EXIF data for the two images above, I was able to shoot in Handheld Hi Res mode while also using an extension tube… or two.

I’d prefer more of a rubbery grip texture on the focus ring, something like the Panasonic 25mm’s focus ring. While I agree with almost every assessment you made, your “cons” conclusion that this lens is not the smallest m4/3 lens is quite idiotic. The downside to this technique is that you are getting your lens down and dirty into the wet vegetation or mud which wouldn’t be possible without weatherproofing. Like all lenses, it struggles if it gets too dark, but I find that it keeps focusing in slightly dimmer conditions than my other f/2.

With this 60mm lens, for example, you can stand as far back as a full-frame photographer with a 120mm macro lens, yet your kit is going to be much lighter. The farther I have to be from the subject, the worse the lit-up scene, just as difficult the lighting is when you are too close.
