About this deal

There are a couple of other recurring characters who deserve a mention, primarily because of their strong characters. Cronin has ensured that Dr Finlay is a character with whom most people can identify and this level of realism and the humour with which it is presented is what makes the book so readable. Cameron was played by Brian Pettifer, and Janet was played initially by Katy Murphy, and then by Celia Imrie. Two doctors and their unflappable housekeeper Janet deal with daily trials and tribulations at a medical practice in a Scottish village during the aftermath of WW1.

citation needed] One newspaper even accused the author of "maliciously doing millions out of legitimate enjoyment. This was followed by two series of Dr Finlay: Further Adventures of a Black Bag in 2002 and 2003, with Sinclair and Pettifer joined by Celia Imrie as Janet and Stella Gonet as Nurse Angus. There is also an element of cruelty in some of the stories which was clearly removed in the TV series for obvious reasons: Finlay pushes a man in a wheelchair down a hill into a bush and he deliberately poisons an old lady (but not fatally! One is Dr Finlay's boss, Dr Cameron, who takes advantage of his young colleague's good nature to skive off work as often as he can.In 1917 he served as a surgeon sub-lieutenant in the Royal Navy Volunteers Reserve, and at the war’s end he completed his medical studies and practiced in South Wales.

His boss is a crusty old practitioner, Dr Cameron, and the wily housekeeper, Janet, keeps them functioning. Alternatively, the main character will be someone who is suffering unnecessarily, and Dr Finlay will help them to overcome their affliction. And I am learning about disease diagnoses, though the emphasis is on the patients, their characters, treating the patient as a person. However, there is a thread of humour running through all of the stories that are very reminiscent of Yorkshire vet, James Herriot - it is quite likely to be the injection of local colour. This omnibus edition of 'Doctor Finlay of Tannochbrae and Adventures of a Black Bag' revive Cronin's masterpiece for a contemporary audience - stories which are tragic, funny and wry and which a celebration of Cronin's tremendous talent. The first 6 episodes were filmed on the edge of Glasgow at Milngavie's Tannoch Loch and on Tannoch Drive (A J Cronin's choice of name for the town was "Levenford" not "Tannochbrae") On such details does destiny spin! J. Cronin is a fictional account of a small-town Scottish doctor and his adventures caring for his patients during the 1920’s. On the whole, there are some charming stories in this book that make it very readable - ideal for a light, entertaining read. Yes the writing is old-fashioned, and yes some of the words are archaic now, but this is a delightful account of life in a small town.

Doctor Finlay's Casebook ran on television until 1971, and then transferred to the radio, where it continued for another seven years.

This provides some comic relief to a book that at times could be just on the verge of growing too slow. They are a little corny to the modern reader- but as with many fictional pieces written in a past era - it is shortsighted to place modern values on them. I once had to make a train journey all by myself and as I had just had my appendix out my mother paid for a first class ticket. Snoddie, Finlay's crusty detractor and Janet's admirer, played by Eric Woodburn and gossipy Mistress Niven (the district nurse whose formal title was mistress midwife), played by Effie Morrison.
