About this deal

Compared to the ColorPlus 200 and Gold 200 which has an ISO rating of 200, UltraMax has an ISO rating of 400 and is faster by a whole stop than the former two. London Camera Exchange Limited, London Camera Exchange Solent Limited and London Camera Exchange Portsmouth Limited are authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority, register numbers 742719, 761264, 789602 and act as a credit broker and not a lender.

This means that it can cope with all of the most common lighting situations, and is known as a mid-speed film. Is Kodak Ultramax as capable of making the stunning and vivid landscapes we see from Ektar and Provia?Your film’s dynamic range measures how well it can render shadows and highlights in the same shot and how contrasty the results will look. Here’s a solid yellow I got with ultramax last week–it really has a lot of saturation https://pixelfed. Instead, I scanned the Kodak UltraMax using the Kodak UltraMax 400 template and the Kodak Gold using the Kodak Gold 200 template. Instead, I enjoyed the convenience of popping a roll into a camera, dropping it off at the lab, and getting all my scans or prints a few hours later. I’ve successfully zipped it through the autofocus speed machine that is Nikon’s F4, and painstakingly ratcheted it across the film gate of an old-as-dirt Contax.

The colors from Kodak UltraMax 400 come out well saturated and are a bit on the warmer side; a typical Kodak look. I have never shot film, and unfortunately given the current economic climate I am unlikely to be able to start, but I am absolutely loving this series of adventures! When the CP crew and I chose our desert island film (the film that we’d each shoot for the rest of our lives if we could only choose one) I picked Ektar, a high-saturation color film from Kodak’s fine Professional line. The Ultramax 400 is Kodak’s cheaper – hard to use that term in this context – ISO400 color negative film. Kodak's UltraMax 400 is a high-speed daylight-balanced color negative film offering a wide exposure latitude for greater versatility, as well as a fine grain structure with consistent and accurate colors. But, the fact that it can s tand toe-to-toe against professional-grade films at a much cheaper rate alone speaks volumes about how good this film is.

Unfortunately, I can’t remember which type of a minilab machine it was or if the people who processed my rolls did anything special.I’ve always preferred the colors of Ultramax and have often wished that Kodak would make a professional version with a grain structure like Portra 400. The higher ISO rating and the wide exposure latitude of the film will ensure that your photos come out crisp and well exposed.

This is a very high quality film that is ideal where the finite qualities of Portra 400 are not required and it offers a considerable cost saving over Portra. For me its the great natural tones I love, no crazy oversaturated colours that digital photos tend to display. You can read more about Kodak UltraMax here, and read a comparison of UltraMax and Fuji Superia here.

Greater ISO means that the images produced by UltraMax are not very smooth like the professional and more expensive Provia or the Ektar. With considerable and easy availability, it can be processed almost anywhere and by its nature it will deliver consistent results. Overall I feel it’s a lackluster option compared to Kodak Gold which I believe is the more comparable alternative in terms of pricing and use. Where Kodak Ektar famously ruins lighter skin-tones with garish oranges and reds, Kodak Ultramax 400 renders beautifully when exposed properly.
