About this deal

first time using retinal and this one did not disappoint. I usually use it all over my face and a small amount goes a long way. It’s so gentle and easy to apply, it’s helped massively with my acne scars and spots. soo good!

I got into Korean skincare about 6 months ago, and some of these products have been my introduction to it (thanks to skinfluencing ;). My skin turned out be normal-ish, but was dehydrated and sensitized after years with harsh cleansers and stuff. Gentler, Korean products have been a total game changer for my skin! This Essence Toner is probably their most popular product – it’s been recommended by lots of content creators, including Gothamista and Beauty Within. The obvious thing this immediately does is hydrate the crap out of your skin. Hydration is really the main thing behind that glowy “glass skin” look, and I think this is why this product keeps going viral – the hydration just gives so much instant gratification! The loss of protein, which provides elasticity to our skin's dermal layer, leads to a decrease in collagen and hyaluronic acid, resulting in wrinkles. We developed an eye serum designed to mitigate these wrinkles, combining ginseng extract and retinal. So where does our current molecule, Retinal, akaRetinaldehyde fit into the family (btw, here is a nice visual family tree about who is who)? Remember that retinol needed two conversion steps to become retinoic acid? Yes, you are right, Retinal is the intermediate step betweenretinoic acid and retinol, meaning it needs only one conversion step to become active in the skin. If we go with our royal familyanalogy, Retinal is Prince William, directly next in line to the throne. In addition, 2% (active ingredient 0.02%) of retinal stabilized in the form of liposomes was blended into the formula. All of this to achieve stability and reduce skin irritation at the same time. But in general, this is a very popular product that works well for a lot of people and it’s a great first product if you’re dipping your toes into Korean skincare. Pyunkang Yul Essence Toner Humectants are the key to hydrated, plump skin. Humectants—as cosmetic doctor, Ana Mansouri, MD, explained to Cosmo— pull water from the environment to the upper layers of the skin like a sponge. This results in really plump, really dewy, really smooth skin. There are many different types of humectants, so here is a lil list of some of the most common ones to look for in your eye cream:

So I think this product could work if it fits into your routine. If you have really dehydrated skin and you want one hardcore hydrating product in your routine that keeps your skin plump all day – this isn’t it. But if you want something lightweight and soothing, if your skin isn’t super thirsty, if you want a hydrating toner for summer, or if you use lots of layers of hydration, if you’re doing the 7 skins method, this is great. Round Lab Birch Juice Moisturizing Sun Cream Once retinal is converted, it becomes retinoic acid and does the same things we detailed in our tretinoin description. In a nutshell, it is everything you expect from an anti-aging superstar such as decreased wrinkles, smoother, firmer and more elastic skin. Beauty of Joseon would be one of the most preferable K-Beauty brands for those focused on making foundational improvements to their skin. A big focus of the brand is about improving complexion and helping skin become (and not simply appear) healthier. It just so happens to help they have added a touch of luxury to their ranges as well. I'll also mention that I have extremely senstive skin with rosacea and I find this serum to be fanatastic. I have a post on how to adjust to retinoids with minimal irritation – if this is your first retinoid product, I highly recommend using some of those strategies, especially if you’re going to use this all over your face.

Beauty of Joseon is the type of brand you’ll want to use when you have nagging or long-term skin issues you want to improve. Their products work fantastically to help with skin concerns such as rough patches and dullness. If you have real problems with dullness, especially around the eyes, take a look at some of our best-selling eye creams . What Beauty of Joseon products are the most popular? If you’ve been reading my posts, you’ll know this family of sunscreens has been top of my list for a while – they work really nicely on my skin. They feel like a cream-gel moisturiser going on, they’re hydrating, and they feel like they stay on your skin pretty well. Sometimes I have some doubts about whether all the retinal makes it out of some encapsulation systems. But I don’t think it’s a big issue for cyclodextrin (the main system used in skincare products with retinal), or liposomes, which is what Beauty of Joseon uses. The retinal is at 0.02% which is a low-to-medium concentration.

I found this one very slightly heavier and richer than the Beauty of Joseon sunscreen, so I think this is more suitable if your skin is drier. I also found it more hydrating and slightly lighter than the Isntree one. The logic behind snail essence is that it’s the stuff protecting their belly (I know it’s called the foot, but it feels wrong to call it that…) against the world and helping it repair. It works well with all skin types. However, for sensitive skin, use a small amount to give your skin time to adapt first and increase the amount slowly. The Pyunkang Yul Essence Toner was perfectly soothing and hydrating during the summer months (I used 2-3 layers), but I had to switch to something a bit more hydrating when the temperatures lately have dropped below 0*C. Ginseng: Their star ingredient, which they say they included because it’s been shown to target wrinkles. It’s a hugely popular ingredient in Korean skincare. Mixsoon Bean Essence is another product I heard about from Soo Beauty. She uses it as a hydrating essence, and she’s raved about it enough that I started using it just off her recommendation. The toner has astragalus root extract as the main ingredient. It’s a herb used in Eastern medicine, and there’s not much evidence for what it does on skin, but most plant extracts have some level of humectants for hydrating, and antioxidants that soothe and soak up free radicals on skin. This specific extract also has betaine (soothing and hydrating) and minerals.

They can leave a bit of a shiny finish, so some people find them greasy. For me, the shiny film is super light and falls on the glowy side of the glowy/greasy dichotomy. I think part of this is also that they hydrate my skin really well, which means any oil feels lighter, and makes my skin look better rather than worse.

What is Hanbang?

I have mixed feelings about having all these very similar Kolmar sunscreens on the market. I’ve seen Odile Monod say it’s boring, and while I kind of agree, it’s also really nice to have variations of my favourite formula. If you don’t like this formula or if you’re allergic to one of the components it’s probably less of a good time for you… Mixsoon Bean Essence Glycerin: Also found in the top layer of our skin, glycerin is a natural skincare ingredient that works to keep our skin cells in their correct form, protect our skin barrier, and treat really dry skin and/or irritation. This is just a solid product that captures a lot of the reasons people gravitate towards Korean skincare:
