About this deal

Being an entry-level SSD, the Kingston NV2 range was launched in September 2022, with only a brief press release and little fanfare. This is in stark contrast to most high-end NVMe SSD releases, but not surprising considering the NV2’s budget nature. It uses Phison’s new PS5021-E21 controller with four flash channels, designed for DRAM-less operation, along with what we believe are TLC NAND memory chips (more on this later). Although it is quite far from utilizing the full bandwidth of the PCIe Gen4 interface, that’s not the point of the DRAM-less and value-oriented Kingston NV2. What it does manage to do is perform largely on par with more expensive and formerly high-end SSDs from the previous generation, using the newer interface and comparatively low-end configuration. During gameplay, games seldom write to your storage device. However, game files are written to your storage device during installation and game patches. Kingston’s NV2 PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD is a substantial next-gen storage solution powered by a Gen 4x4 NVMe controller. NV2 delivers read/write speeds of up to 3,500/2,800MB/s with lower power requirements and lower heat to help optimise your system’s performance and deliver value without sacrifice. The compact single-sided M.2 2280 (22x80mm) design expands storage by up to 2TB while saving space for other components, making NV2 ideal for thinner notebooks, small-form-factor (SFF) systems and DIY motherboards. Available in capacities from 250GB - 2TB to give you all the space you need for applications, documents, photos, videos and more. Gen 4x4 NVMe PCIe performance.

As mentioned, a few key details are missing from the official spec sheet. Kingston leaves out any mention of random IOPS performance, NAND memory type, and controller. This essentially leaves room for Kingston to revise these details at a later date as long as it stays within the specs they do mention (notably including Gen4 support). This lifespan value is an estimate of how long the SSD will last. Various factors can impact the actual lifespan, but lifespan estimates indicate how long you can expect the SSD to last. It's important to note that these values are estimates and can be affected by various factors such as usage patterns, environmental conditions, and other factors. Nonetheless, we feel these lifespan estimates provide a good indication of the duration you can expect the SSD to last before it starts showing signs of wear and tear. We can estimate that a hard drive could extract an update at an average write speed of 50 MB/s and read speed of 200 MB/s. At this rate, a hard disk drive would take 1.5 minutes to extract 6 GB of files during the game update. We are in the process of adding the 3DMark Storage Benchmark to our routine, as it’s another useful tool for gauging real-world performance as it relates to gaming. It consists of loading three different games, as well as recording, installing saving, and moving game data. In this benchmark, the overall picture is somewhat moderated compared to the previous results. The SN850 is clearly the most responsive SSD in this context out of our admittedly tiny sample size. Conclusion: Great value at current price point Hard disk drives will extract files slower due to the resulting files being non-contiguous (i.e., spread out across the disk). Because storage device writes are often slower than reading speeds, we've found that game installs/ patches can be pretty frustrating to wait for if you're using a slower storage device. As the name implies, the NV2 lineup is a successor to the NV1 – a range with even more modest specs and one that has hardly been a household name among PC builders. What makes the NV2 a bit more interesting, however, is that it utilizes the PCI Express (PCIe) 4.0 interface, which has so far been reserved mainly for more expensive enthusiast SSDs. This SSD is designed for use in desktop and notebook computer workloads and is not intended for Server environments. Slide the cover off with your left thumb while using the fingers of your left hand to stabilize your PS5. In spite of its unimpressive sequential throughput, Intel’s now-retired Optane SSD lineup remains among the best ever in terms of real-world performance. One of the key reasons was their very low latency – a hugely important factor for user experience. The entry-level Kingston drive outperforms most Gen3 SSDs here, which is good news. Loading Times (PCMark 10, FF XIV) Custom made and designed products such as flash memory products with custom logo’s on them. E,g USB flash drives and memory cards with your own logo In testing, the drive also ran hot even when idle and it draws a decent amount of power, making it less than ideal for many machines, including laptops. Its saving grace is its amazing price, which does make it perhaps good for something other than a primary drive.Position your PS5 console so that the PS logo is facing down, and the power button is facing away from you.

Some of the listed capacity on a Flash storage device is used for formatting and other functions and thus is not available for data storage. As such, the actual available capacity for data storage is less than what is listed on the products. For more information, go to Kingston's Flash Memory Guide. The Kingston NV2 is an easy recommendation for those buying under Php5000. Whether you have a Gen4 or Gen3 slot, its going to work and will offer you a boost in perforamnce specially coming off hard drives. Most of you reading this are probably looking for a cheap SSDs or is offered a cheaper SSD upgrade for your laptop or PC. If you’re being offered the Kingston NV2 for free with a drive-less system, then by all means its a good enough starting point. We use the Quarch HD Programmable Power Module to gain a deeper understanding of power characteristics. Idle power consumption is an important aspect to consider, especially if you're looking for a laptop upgrade as even the best ultrabooks can have mediocre storage. Delivers read/write speeds of up to 3,500/2,800MB/s for an overall faster system. Ideal for systems with limited space.Compared to the budget competitors, the Kingston NV2 does similarly well in CrystalDiskMark. Although there is certainly nothing spectacular about these numbers, we see the NV2 consistently outpacing Gen3 drives as far as sequential read performance goes.
