When Ayoade promoted the book on The Graham Norton Show last year, fellow guest Olivia Colman was clearly intrigued by it. This was a rather bizarre premise for a book but of course, comedy genius Richard Ayoade managed to pull it off.Ayoade is probably one of my favourite actors and comedians. I hadn't read anything from him before this, and maybe if I had I would have been better prepared for this book, but it was not to be.

The only faults I saw in this book was I didn't get a lot of the references to celebrities enough to enjoy the joke to it's full capability and I wish the middle portion was more like the 'Interview' with himself section as they were definitely my favourite parts. It's more of an assault of autobiographies and interviews and cinema as a whole, and so many other things.

I've had the (dis)pleasure of watching View From the Top so, as soon as I discovered that it was going to be the topic for Richard Ayoade's third book, I knew I had to read this book. It was nearly 15 years ago now but I am still haunted by that film. The horrible orange outfit that Gwyneth and the cringe-inducing singalong during the credits. The film was badly made, badly written, and badly acted. We laughed our way through it. Definitely not something you can easily forget. And don't get me started on the feminist issues that the film raises or we'll be here all night. Whatever I think about the film, I was super excited to see Ayoade break it down into minute detail. His last two books have shown us how much of cinephile he is but this book looks set to take it even further. Ayoade served as president in 1998, and during his time there was captured in a local TV documentary which also features a young John Oliver, one of Ayoade's Footlights writing partners. If you like your humour high class and silly this book is for you. It's short (like this review) but you really need to pay attention and in all honesty it was the perfect length for what it contained and talked about. I found Ayoade's dry wit and his clever observations regarding the film's many 'subtexts' and his asides on Paltrow's career to be 'on point'. So i read it. And I will have to keep it, if just for the Index. Few books have indices that, standing alone, are mightily risible:However there are some cons/things that aren't for everyone. There's a lot of to-and-fro (about 60% of the book is in ridiculous footnotes) and if you can't get into that idea on it's lunacy fundamental level, I'm afraid it might be a frustrating read. I however loved it. Furthermore the ending (if you can call it that) is sorta weak compared to the first 3/4 of the book. According to The Sun, he was a "leading candidate" to replace hosts Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc at one point. Can you picture him presiding over proceedings in the Baking Show's famous tent?
