About this deal

They do well in centrally heated homes (they need a minimum temperature of 16°C (61°F), in a spot with bright, filtered light, such as close to an east-facing window. Replant in the same pot with fresh orchid compost or choose a slightly larger pot if the plant won’t fit. Orchids are grown for their flowers, so it's essential that they're deadheaded correctly to encourage more flowers.

How to care for orchids - BBC Gardeners World Magazine

They like bright light - close to an east window is ideal and a moderate temperature of around 12-15°C (55-60°F).These amazing plants are to be found all over the world in forests, on mountains and even in deserts. The stories of these courageous ‘Plant Hunters’ make exciting reading and I strongly recommend The Plant Hunters by Toby Musgrave, Chris Gardener and Will Musgrave first published as a paperback in 1999 by Seven Dials (ISBN 1-84188-001-9). Unlike most other pot plants, orchids don’t need regular re-potting and often thrive when root-bound. Many healthy plants appear to have totally exposed and pot-bound roots but they thrive, producing flower after flower. Showy Vanda orchids, which are often grown in glass vases without compost, require a specific watering regime: fill the vase with water daily in summer, then empty it after half an hour.

To date up to around 30,000 different species have been identified with more being found every year. They do best in cooler temperatures from 12-15°C (55-60°F) but are forgiving of temperature fluctuations. Place the plant in a warm (anything above 15 degrees C is fine) and draft-free room in indirect light – not on a window-ledge that gets direct sunlight all day. Water when the growing media is completely dry, then water generously; many orchids are killed by overwatering so check that the compost has almost dried out between waterings. You can expect a Moth Orchid to flower about once a year so, as the flowers can last up to 6 months, you will have a beautiful spray of orchids nearly all the time. The watering routine is exactly the same as above; they do not flower as long as the Moth Orchids – but still far longer than any cut flower I have come across.
