Starburst (originally known as Opal Fruits) is the brand name of a box-shaped, fruit-flavoured soft taffy candy manufactured by The Wrigley Company, which is a subsidiary of Mars, Incorporated. The world renowned Starburst candy was invented around the year 1960, in the UK. Peter Pfeffer is rumored to have been the first version of the fruity candy which he called Opal Fruits. During that time, the flavors included lime, orange, strawberry, and lemon. Once the brand was gaining popularity, Pfeffer introduced Opal Fruits to the Mars company, who brought it to the UK markets about five years later. In 1967, the candy traveled to the US where it was renamed Starburst which became its global identity by 1998.
