The Dell G3 comes with a standard one-year warranty, which isn’t great — however, it’s what we’ve come to expect from large manufacturers (that aren’t Apple). While its components are all up-to-date, the missing USB-C port makes it a bit less futureproof. The replaceable memory and storage do ensure that you can upgrade in the future when you’re ready. The internal speakers are another aspect of the laptop that will go underused by gamers who’ll prefer to use headphones or external speakers. What’s here isn’t terrible, but it’s not great, either. If the display is where you want to put your money, the Acer Nitro 5 or Lenovo Legion Y545 are better bets. But in either case you’ll lose out on battery life, while the Legion has a worse keyboard and the Nitro 5 is bulky with weaker audio. Dell Mobile Connect lets you use your phone from your laptop, though that’s a bit less impressive now that Windows has it built in with the “Your Phone utility.” Dell also has a Dropbox (with 20GB for 1 year for new users) and Netflix preinstalled.Windows 10, of course, has a bunch of junk. On our review unit, that included Hotspot Shield Free VPN, Farm Heroes Saga, Candy Crush Friends Saga, Hulu and Spotify. On these two games, the G3 15 is roughly the third or fourth best performer on average, which fits the on-paper hierarchy of the GPUs in use. However, the Nitro 5 is less expensive and delivers just about the same performance (though its screen is not high-refresh), so that’s not the best outcome for the G3 15 in that head to head. Hard drive retention: Hard drive retention is not available on models with a soldered hard drive, including XPS 9315 2in1, Chromebooks or Venue tablets, except the Venue 11 Pro.

On the Rise of the Tomb Raider benchmark (1920 x 1080, very high), the Dell G3 ran the game at 30 fps, tying the Nitro 5 and beating the 25 fps average. The Legion, with the same GPU but a better Core i7 CPU, hit 49 fps.For context, this weight is lighter than that of some cheap gaming laptops, such as the Acer Nitro 5 (5.51 pounds), but heavier than others, such as the MSI Bravo 15 (4.1 pounds). You generally have to pay more for super-slim and light systems (especially gaming laptops) like the Razer Blade 15 or MSI Stealth 15M, so this is reasonable for a budget machine. If you’re really concerned with portability, there is a new wave of 14-inch laptops, as well, but they’re a bit beyond budget-tier pricing. The MSI Bravo is a good starting place if you're just getting into the world of PC gaming. It has quality components, but nothing too flashy or expensive. It's compact at just 15.6-inches, but the screen still has a 144Hz refresh rate and 1080p resolution. The main money saver is in the AMD Ryzen 5 processor. The graphics card is an impressive Nvidia GeForce RTX 4050, which is where most of the budget goes. It skimps a bit on memory, with a standard 16GB of RAM but only 512GB of storage on its SSD. The Dell G3 15 has solid battery life -- at least, for a gaming laptop. It endured 6:41 on our battery test, which continuously browses the web, runs OpenGL benchmarks and streams video, all at 150 nits. It took 17 seconds to copy 4.97GB of files (the spinning HDD may have been a factor there), That equates to 299.4 MBps. That’s still a tad faster than the entry-level gaming average (295.4 MBps) and the Legion (188.5 MBps). The Nitro 5 was faster. The average GPU temperature was 66.5 degrees Celsius (151.7 degrees Fahrenheit), and ran at an average of 1.2 GHz (again, this didn’t work as hard during those loading screens.
