I know some of the newer, more advanced rain jacket fabrics are supposed to be even more breathable (such as Gore-Tex Pro, Polartec Neoshell, and eVent), but I haven’t given those a try quite yet. I would be interested in your views as to the breathability of this fabric compared to say gore text or other proprietary materials.

I am not overly concerned about the hood as I wear specs, and prefer the shield of a Tilley hat to keep the rain off. They’ve got trench coat styles featuring the same fabric, so those are worth checking out too, but this review is just for the parka. I don’t mind bright yellow if I need to signal a passing ship in the night after capsizing in a storm, but if I’m just walking around town on a regular day, shouldn’t I have options that look a bit more subtle? Well, Uniqlo feels pretty much the same way, and their Blocktech rain jackets are exactly the sort of functional/fashionable items that travelers will adore. The fabric itself is stretchy, but getting the perfect adjustment (tight enough that it won’t fall over my hands, and loose enough that I can yank it up to my elbows), was a little tricky, and elastic cuffs would have fixed that. When it comes to functionality, the jacket won’t be enough to shield you from a full-on downpour or hurricane (and definitely not Niagara falls). The inner surface is visible there too, and although it’s a bit difficult to describe, it’s almost…rubbery. In any case, this is definitely an option for a nicer rain shell, but I’d say it loses on the packability (mine is about the size of a closed fist, this seems a bit bigger). Very timely arrival of your recommendation, as I have been looking for a better light packable rainproof parka, have been a fan of Uniqlo since their Airism underpants, and just happen to be in UK while they have a sale on in my size of the Blocktech parka.
