About this deal

Our guide to the best baby food brands includes some familiar names – Ella's Kitchen, Heinz For Baby and HiPP Organic – as well as own brands such Aldi Mamia Organic and Asda Little Angels. We asked parents to tell us which they preferred, and which their babies liked the best. In our latest baby food survey, we asked 268 parents with children up to five years old to rate each baby food brand they've tried. Goats' milk formulas are not suitable for infants with cows' milk allergy (also known as cows' milk protein allergy), as the proteins they contain are very similar. Hungrier baby formula (hungry milk) This formula is suitable for babies who are lactose intolerant. This means they cannot absorb lactose, which is a sugar that's naturally in milk and dairy products.

Other popular brands include Cow & Gate , Heinz for Baby , HiPP Organic and Organix . These all have huge ranges, including purées and meals in glass jars if you're looking to cut down on your plastic use. The chemical structure of phytoestrogens is similar to the female hormone oestrogen. Because of this, there are concerns that they could affect a baby's reproductive development, especially in babies who drink only soya-based infant formula. Only use soya formula if it has been recommended or prescribed by a health visitor or GP. Growing-up milk (toddler milk) I have avoided the porridge with milk powder and cow's milk since (used soya the other day and she was ok with that) but gave her a little bit of cheese the other day and she came out in the same rash, so I think it must be the cow's milk protein that is the problem. The thing that confuses me though is that she didn't seem to have any problem with formula milk (which is also cow's milk isn't it?) although she is breast fed and only had formula a couple of times. Do you know why this might be?There are some concerns about the fact that soya contains phytoestrogens. These are found naturally in some plants. Although it's often described as suitable for "hungrier babies", there's no evidence that babies settle better or sleep longer when fed this type of formula. Anti-reflux (staydown) formula Growing-up and toddler milks are marketed as an alternative to whole cows' milk for toddlers and children over 1 year old. There's no evidence to suggest that these products provide extra nutritional benefits for young children. Formula milk provides babies with the nutrients they need to grow and develop. However, it does not have the same health benefits as breastfeeding for you and your baby. For example, it cannot protect your baby from infections. First infant formula (first milk)

Lactose-free formula is available in pharmacies and shops, but if you think your baby may be lactose intolerant, it's important to speak to a midwife, health visitor or GP. Hypoallergenic formula This type of formula contains cows' milk proteins that have already been partly broken down (partially hydrolysed). This is supposed to make it easier to digest and help prevent digestive problems such as colic and constipation. However, there's no evidence for this. Research shows that switching to follow-on formula at 6 months has no benefits for your baby. Your baby can continue to have first infant formula as their main drink until they are 1 year old. Formula milk, also known as baby formula or infant formula, is usually made from cows' milk that has been treated to make it more suitable for babies.Piccolo Organic came top, with a surprising 100% of parents saying their baby was happy to eat it, while HiPP Organic and Tesco own brand weren't far behind, with 99% of parents saying the food made their babies happy. Hi Michelle, I have just seen your post and was wondering if you ever got to the bottom of your daughters skin reaction to porridge. Soya formula is made from soya beans, not cows' milk. It's occasionally used as an alternative to cows' milk formula for babies who have cows' milk allergy. To discover which food babies like the best, we also asked parents how happy, if at all, their baby was when eating it.

If your baby is diagnosed as being allergic to cows' milk, a GP will prescribe an appropriate hypoallergenic infant formula with fully hydrolysed (broken down) proteins. It turned out that my daughter actually had a milk protein allergy. After trying a little yogurt and some cheese the same rash occurred so I took her to the GP who referred her to a specialist. She had some allergy tests done and was referred to a dietician. They say that most children grow out of it by the time they are 5 but we have been very fortunate as our dd grew out of it by the time she was 18 months, so life is a lot easier now Allow your baby to go at their own pace and explore new foods and textures (even if it's a little messy). We asked what they thought of the baby food according to the following criteria: whether it looks appealing, smells good, is value for money, is convenient to transport and use, and if the brand offers a good range of options. This 1st happened a few days ago, so I left the porridge for a few days and tried again and the same thing happened so it must be the porridge causing it as she hasn't reacted like that to anything else. No other symptons and her poo's have been fine. When your baby is 1 year old, they can start to drink whole cows' milk or sheep's or goats' milk (as long as these milks are pasteurised).

However when I have given her baby porridge (cow & gate), she eats it ok but where it gets around her face her skin seems to react and goes all red and blotchy with small white spots. This stays for an hour or so and then goes. I do not use wipes or anything on her face - just water to clean food off. The instructions for making up anti-reflux formulas may be different to standard formula. The usual guidelines for how to make up baby formula recommend using boiled water that has stood for no more than 30 minutes, so that the temperature is still above 70C.

So my advice would be to try different porridges to see how your little one reacts and every now and again, maybe monthly, try the ones she reacted to again to see how she is and hopefully yours will grow out of it to. The NHS recommends waiting until your baby is six months old to introduce solid foods. Until this age, they should be getting all the nutrients they need from breast milk or infant formula.
