Kingsbarns Balcomie is released by Kingsbarns distillery, which released its first core range of single malt whiskey in 2019. It is made up of locally grown fife barley. It is specially matured in American oaks that were previously held by oloroso sherry. The Kingsbarns Balcomie is one of the top-selling single malts of Lowland distillery. The casks used for maturing are chosen for their oak flavor and sherry-rich sweetness to compliment the spirit. It is a perfect balance of spirit and wood. The distillery is located in Lowlands and was built in 1963 by William’s grandson Charles Gordon. It is the second single malt released by the distillery and has more sweetness than the first release of Ailsa Bay. The sweetness of Ailsa Bay sweet smoke has been increased to 119 SPPPM. The whiskey is matured in the Hudson baby bourbon barrels for 6 to 9 months. After the first fill aging process, it is refilled in American Oak and Virgin oak for several years. Nose

For a whisky romantic that’s probably not the best way to try and sell whisky. Whisky enthusiasts like myself are accustomed to reading about the history of the distillery and about the traditional side of making whisky. Despite sounding over-engineered, curiously it all makes sense and really does work. Especially given that Ailsa Bay is one of the world’s most technologically advanced distilleries. Initially, Glenkinchie 12 years gives you a feeling of apple pudding flavor, and at the same time, it gives you a palate of lemon drizzle cake with notes of oaks. All such flavor is somehow delicate and gives you a great experience of single malt. Finishing off our list is one of the most affordable Lowland single malt scotches, the first release from Kingsbarn produced by Wemyy’s family. The whiskey has already shown great potential in its first few months of release. Blended Scotch Whisky A blended whisky is the production of whisky using one or more whiskies from a different distillery. So if we have Glenlivet single malt and we mix it with another Glenlivet single malt it is still as single malt. However if we mixed that single malt with a Glenfiddich it is now blended whisky, simples. This allows whiskies of lesser age and personality to be used to blend flavours together and make a cheap alternative to single malt. There’s always talk of blended whisky not being nearly as good as its closest competitor the single mal, but we beg to differ here at The Whisky Company. When the weather warms and your looking for something a little more thirst quenching and cooler you should turn to some excellent blended whiskies. Some examples of blended whisky are Johnnie Walker, Chivas Regal, Bells, Jameson Irish Whisky, Canadian Club, Seagram’s Seven American Whiskey and let’s not forget some of those extra special Japanese brands including Hibiki. Some new blended whisky in the market now is the Pure Scot blend from Bladnoch Distillery and Hibiki Harmony from Suntory. These whiskies can be taken straight, on ice or mixed to make a refreshing contemporary drink… Bottled at 48.9% ABV and without an age statement, the nose is meaty, smoky, earthy and has a feint but important note of fresh fleshy fruits including melons and a subtle lemon citrus.
