If you want a gelcoat top layer, just add 2% by weight of wax in styrene, I add that even if I make up a flow coat. More recently I was repairing a friends WWR kayak where the gel coat on the hull was pretty much entirely gone (if it ever had any, I think some race boats were built with just clear resin which doesn't maintain a smooth finish like gelcoat). After some discussion we decided to attempt re-gel coating to try and get a smooth gloss finisih again, I also used the opportunity to fair over a coulple of external patches I had needed to put on (one of which covered the whole stern after filling some dents and hollows from accumulated damage - I had already patched inside and replaced some of the foam core). After repairing I sanded the entire hull, and in a fit of madness decided to try spraying clear gel coat. I've done this a couple times since that old thread, it is not easy and I would say too much work just because you want to change the colour of a boat. Spraying flowcoat may have worked better but I wasn't sure if the 4.7mm nozzle would be appropriate - the gun is needleless and a thinner medium may simply have poured out, other nozzles are available and I may look at getting one in case I try spraying flowcoat in future. Obviously you need to take care with your PPE and ventilation if spraying gel, a good respirator rated for inorganic vapours is a must.
