About this deal

Above, I held the longest side of the loft hatch kit's opening against some structural timber to copy the length and cut with a hand saw*. I made two of these cuts. I then ensured it was flush with the bottom of the UPVC fascia cladding and screwed in the middle. Tip: By adding a screw in the middle, it allowed me to get level from either side easier. Hinged Loft Hatches:For easy access, our hinged loft hatches are a popular option. These hatches feature a hinged door that can be opened and closed effortlessly, allowing convenient entry to your loft space. You can choose from a range of materials and finishes, including metal or plastic frames, to match your aesthetic preferences. Next, we fixed the ladder to the door, then I had to screw a hanging support strip from the top, either side to the hatch opening. Note, it has a washer to allow the hatch to open, freely.

We found this gap to be 21", which yours is probably different. Cutting the Bottom Folding Loft Ladders Now, don't get too cosy as we haven't quite finished. You'll probably find that the wooden loft ladders aren't quite the right length. Ours were too long. After drawing around our loft hatch template, I drilled a hole to slot my jigsaw in. Then cut along my pen lines. All our standard size loft hatches are designed to fit between 600mm joist centres. 600mm is the standard width between the centre of the timber ceiling joists in the loft, this has been a requirement of UK Building Regulations for many years so applies to a good number of properties. This will give a width of something around 560mm (+ or – 5mm). You’ll notice most of our loft hatches are geared to suit a width of 560mm. If you can’t find a standard size loft hatch to fit we can make you one to measure. See further below for information on our made to measure loft hatches.

Keep them up to date of major changes, too, and see if there is anything you can do to alter how the builders will be working if neighbours raise concerns. When working out your timescales, make sure you're building in time for any additional work that needs to be done once the conversion is fitted. Note, if you do cut through timber, you'll need to fix in replacement supports with strong enough fittings, such as bolts, etc. Cutting the Ceiling For a Loft Hatch Then add more screws around. Another screwing tip: avoid an impact driver here, or go easier, as the Youngman loft frame is much slimmer. Attaching the Hatch Door After taking the loft hatch support to the hole we created, we first needed to prop it with timber as it was hanging from the UPVC fascia. If, for example, you want to create access to your attic in a confined area, then I recommend these WolfWise telescopic loft ladders for small spaces. Depending on when it was built, your home will either have roof trusses or rafters. By looking through your loft hatch, you should be able to tell straight away what type of roof you have. So, we had to open out, but have the excess folding behind the opening to allow us to open them fully.

People who have been through a conversion can't stress this enough - the tradesmen at the company you go for will end up spending a good deal of time in your home, so it's vital you feel comfortable with them. We knew what was above this area, as it was originally a flat roof with felt, simply joining the house to the garage. By 2019, my Dad built a pitched roof on top. Building firms and architects may steer you towards their own idea for the layout. While their experience is undoubtedly valuable, it's your home and you know what works best for your needs, so don't be afraid to add your own ideas at the planning stage. Ultimately, the answer to this question depends on the trader you're using and the type of loft conversion they're dealing with.If you have rafters, as opposed to roof trusses (see below), your loft should be easier to convert. Roof trusses
