About this deal

The main way to differentiate UniFi switches is that the 1st generation model names begin with "US-" and the 2nd generation model names begin with "USW-". See UniFi Switches Comparison and Buyers Guide to compare all available models. New Desktop/Small Switches The UDM and UXG run a different underlying operating system than the USG. The CPU is an easy way to tell. Older MIPS-based devices EdgeRouters and the USG run EdgeOS. ARM based devices like the UDM and UXG run UniFi OS. An ARM port of EdgeOS is unlikely. UniFi OS is a custom Linux distribution made with Buildroot Linux that mostly follows Debian standards. In their announcement, Ubiquiti said this about UniFi OS: As far as other limitations go, we’ll have to wait until this product is released and put through it’s paces to really know. It’s a simple device, the most exciting part is the role it fulfills in the gateway lineup and how that affects the entire UniFi ecosystem. The pro models have lots of PoE, support redundant power via the USP-RPS, and have some limited L2+/L3 features like static routing and a DHCP server The UDM and UniFi OS Consoles in general were a big change in the UniFi line. Before, it was easy to run the UniFi Network application anywhere, and add any devices you wanted. With the UDM, you’re forced to use the built-in Network application, meaning you can’t add a UDM to a Cloud Key or self-hosted UniFi Network controller.

All UniFi Gateways, Cloud Gateways, and UniFi OS Consoles, as of November 2023. See my UniFi Router Comparison for more details. For clarity I've separated them into categories based on their role.Since the UXG-Pro has the same processor and 10 Gbps ports as the UDM-Pro, we should expect similar performance. This graph shows it all. While the USG and USG-Pro are older, they have some features which have not shown up in the newer products. Namely, any feature which requires manually editing the JSON config file on the USG is not possible with the UXGs or Dream Machines. The newer hardware doesn’t have the same underlying architecture, and does not have the same JSON config file workaround. You are limited to what features are exposed in the web interface. I think long term, it will be better to move away from that system. Manual configuration file changes were unsupported, poorly documented, and your changes could be removed with firmware updates. Ubiquiti has promised full feature parity (and more!), but we will see. It will take a lot of development work to get parity with the officially supported USG features. Throughput Details Built-in 128 GB SSD and SD card slot for UniFi Protect motion recording, with a 512 GB SD card pre-installed.

From all available information, this is a proper USG-Pro replacement. Ubiquiti mentioned the UXG-Pro is part of new product line, so it’s a fairly safe assumption there will be a smaller, non-Pro model. The base UXG should be a replacement for the USG. These products are still being developed, and there is no official announcement of any other UXG models besides the UXG-Pro yet. Still, this is great news. This limitation also affects the USG Pro too, limiting it to 250mbps. This is where the UDM line differs from the USG line, thanks to much more powerful internals the UDM Pro for example can handle 1Gbps traffic with DPI and IDS or IPS activated. Also, USB-C power input is a welcome upgrade from a DC barrel plug in my opinion. It would have been nice to see a PoE input option for power though. Asterisks The UDM is an all-in-one UniFi OS Console, or UniFi Cloud Gateway. It acts as a firewall/router, switch, and wireless access point. It also runs the UniFi Network application.

We'll start by looking at all of the current options for UniFi gateways, including some older ones that Ubiquiti no longer lists on their official store. Current Gateways

code, if you have your admin user connected to your UI.com account and have enabled 2FA authenticationBasically a UDM-Pro without the built-in UniFi OS Console, 8-port Ethernet switch, or 3.5” HD bay for UniFi Protect. We are very excited to announceUniFi OS- a shared platform for all UniFi Controllers. Key features: One potential problem with the UXG-Pro is the current state of the UDM-Pro and UniFi OS. Some features on the UDM-Pro are not working, incomplete, buggy, or just missing. Development for the Dream Machines has been steady, but after 9 months, the UXG is still on on beta firmware version 0.5.0. Judging by Ubiquiti’s actions and the hardware and software they’ve released, creating a new standalone gateway for USG customers wasn’t a priority.

I think long term, it will be better to move away from that system. It's poorly documented and your changes can be removed with firmware updates. Ubiquiti has promised full feature parity (and more!), but we will see. It will take a lot of development work just to get parity with the officially supported USG features. Like the USG, the USG-Pro is old, and most of the limitations apply. The USG-Pro has slightly more powerful hardware than the USG, but not by much. If you’re comparing to the EdgeRouter line, the EdgeRouter Pro (discontinued) and the USG-Pro share a CPU, and have similar performance. This underlying OS difference causes some other differences. The UDM and UXG lines do not support editing the config.gateway.json file. By editing the configuration file manually, you were able to access features that Ubiquiti doesn’t put in the controller GUI. It also let you access hidden settings, and tweak features to work how you want. Normally, behind the scenes, the UniFi controller edits your configuration files for you. That only works with the features that Ubiquiti officially supports. If you’ve ever had to deploy a UniFi network, you know there are a many features not in the GUI. Unfortunately there is nothing like this going forward, and you are limited to what Ubiquiti shows in the controller. Now, finally, USG owners have some new hardware they can buy. That is, if they haven’t upgraded to a Dream Machine, UXG-Pro, or found another vendor. Standalone is my term, but these gateways require the UniFi Network application to be run on another piece of hardware such as a Cloud Key, local PC/server, or cloud service. The USG models are nearing the end of their useful life, while the UXG models are current. Cloud Gateways — Dream MAchinesOnly time will tell how the development goes for the UXG-Pro. If you have an existing UniFi network with your own controller, this is probably going to be a better fit that the UDM or UDM-Pro. The unannounced base UXG should be a good little router, if Ubiquiti can get the software right.
