Jewish exodus from Muslim countries, the twentieth century emigration, expulsion or escape of Jews, in which Jewish populations from Middle Eastern countries moved to Israel Ari and his friends Zev, David, and Joab, all members of the secret Jewish army, the Palmach, carry out the preparations for the escape with precision and efficiency. Dov, a teenage boy who survived Auschwitz, provides excellent forgeries that Ari needs to acquire weapons and supplies and to get the children out of Caraolos. Ari is a skilled strategist who can anticipate the actions of his enemy. He asks Mark to file a news story about the escape attempt as soon as the three hundred children have boarded the ship, Exodus, during broad daylight. He wants international attention on the mission. By the time the British realize that an escape attempt is occurring, it is too late. There is a standoff that lasts for days, the children on board Exodus, and the British, watching helplessly as the world forms its opinions. Finally, after days of dangerous hunger strikes and threats of suicide,British Major Cecil Bradshaw decides to allow Exodus to sail to Palestine. Akiva is arrested, imprisoned in Acre fortress, and sentenced to hang after the Irgun bomb the King David Hotel. The British authorities fail to heed a warning of the planned bombing which resulted in dozens of fatalities. Ari plots an escape to save Akiva's life, and free Haganah and Irgun fighters imprisoned by the British military. Dov, who eluded capture after the hotel bombing, turns himself in to utilize his bomb-making expertise to facilitate the Acre Prison break.

Preparing to write Exodus, for example, he read nearly 300 books, underwent a physical-training program in preparation for about 12,000 miles of travel within Israel and interviewed more than 1,200 people... Bosley Crowther of The New York Times described the film as a "dazzling, eye-filling, nerve-tingling display of a wide variety of individual and mass reactions to awesome challenges and, in some of its sharpest personal details, a fine reflection of experience that rips the heart." The film's "principal weakness," Crowther wrote, "is that it has so much churning around in it that no deep or solid stream of interest evolves—save a vague rooting interest in the survival of all the nice people involved." [1] Meanwhile, opposition to partitioning Palestine into separate Arab and Jewish states is intensifying. Karen's young beau, Dov Landau, is recruited into the Irgun, a radical pro-Zionist militant group. Ari Ben Canaan's uncle, Akiva, who heads the Irgun, first interviews Dov. Before swearing him in, Akiva forces Dov into confessing he was a Sonderkommando in Auschwitz and was sodomized by the Nazi camp guards; this is where Dov acquired his bomb expertise. Akiva's violent activities run counter to his brother Barak, Ari's father, who heads the mainstream Jewish Agency, working to create a Jewish state through political and diplomatic means. Barak fears the Irgun will derail these efforts, especially as the British have placed a price on Akiva's head. Coming out of the service, he worked for a newspaper, writing in his spare time. In 1950, Esquire magazine bought an article, and he began to devote himself to writing more seriously. Drawing on his experiences in Guadalcanal and Tarawa he produced the best-selling, Battle Cry, a novel depicting the toughness and courage of U.S. Marines in the Pacific. He then went to Warner Brothers in Hollywood helping to write the movie, which was extremely popular with the public, if not the critics. Later he went on to write The Angry Hills, a novel set in war-time Greece. In the 19th century, Ari's father Jossi and uncle Yakov are driven by a Russian pogrom, a violent anti-Jewish riot, to seek refuge in Palestine. They find Palestine disappointing because the Jews are too proud to farm and spoiled by money pouring in from overseas philanthropists. What does this teach the reader about the changes that have happened in the land by the time Ari Ben Canaan arrives nearly 100 year later? And now 70 years since then? The 33rd Academy Awards (1961) Nominees and Winners". oscars.org. Archived from the original on April 2, 2015 . Retrieved July 15, 2020.
