About this deal

Some shrubs may show signs of reverted growth or ‘sporting’. This is where random shoots of different leaves associated with the plant’s parentage begin to appear. Most commonly this is where plants with variegated leaves sprout pure green growths instead of variegated ones. They must be well watered in, and then watered each time the top couple of centimetres of compost feels dry to the touch. Looks Good With We have a detailed guide on how and when to prune Photinias, but in short, we recommend pruning them no more than twice a year (though feel free to use sharp secateurs to snip off any wayward stems throughout the year) and making sure to trim the interior branches to promote air circulation within the plant. Photinias are prone to fungal diseases, so accurate pruning is important for disease prevention. Read all about the pests, diseases and common problems with Photinias. Can you take cuttings from Photinia Red Robin? We recommend planting Photinia Red Robin in a single row between 60cm/2ft apart and 90cm/3ft apart: You will need to feed your Red Robin (Photinia) with a balanced slow release fertiliser which also has trace elements such as Vitax Q4 or a granulated slow release fertiliser which is now available for shrubs If you have repotted your Photinia in a brand multi purpose compost there will be enough nutrients in the compost to feed your plant for 4 to 6 weeks.

If you like to keep your garden tidy be aware that Photinia Red Robin can drop it’s leaves throughout the year, which can require frequent sweeping up. Fallen leaves can also provide a safe haven for slugs and snails. I am about to plant a photinia hedge and was wondering what shrubs to plant in the bed in front of it to set each other off best. I have about 12 foot to fill Bill replies...Drain the water from the pot and wrap it with a thin plastic film or dip it in cling wrap to secure. Plant markers will work as good holders for this.

Photinia ‘Red Robin’ generally has good disease resistance, but there are a couple of exceptions. Leaf Spot When you decide to place your Red Robins into a container, the first thing you need to make sure is that the container has at least a 45 cm diameter and is large enough to hold them in it. Obviously, the larger the container, the better for them as it gives them a lot of room to grow well. As expected, you need to place the red robin plant in the hole, making sure it's filled with soil, a similar depth as the pot it originally came in. Add the soil around the roots, gently firm the soil down around the edges and water well! The best method for propagating Photinia ‘Red Robin’ and other P. × fraseri cultivars is by softwood or semi-ripe cuttings. Propagating Photinia by Cuttings Other shrubs that make good companions to ‘Red Robin’ on more acidic soils include Pieris japonica‘Little Heath’ and Pieris ‘Flaming Silver’. The variegated Japanese spurge, Pachysandra terminalis‘Variegata’ can be planted around Photinia ‘Red Robin’ to create a complementary, 20cm tall mat of evergreen leaves with cream margins.

As may be expected, John Innes No. 2 or 3 would be an appropriate choice, as would any proprietary (or home grown) multi-purpose compost. Photinia Red Robin is part of our peat-free growing trials and is performing extremely well so, if you are a peat-free gardener, your Photinia Red Robin shouldn’t complain. Feeding a Container Planted Photinia ‘Red Robin’ When the Photinia Red Robin is young, regular watering is completely fine; however, once the plant is established and reaches maturity, it will not need much water at all. In fact, Photinia Red Robin struggles in waterlogged soil. We recommend applying mulch to the top layer of soil around the established Photinia Red Robin plant – this will hold water for considerably longer, so there is less need to water frequently. Pruning I have a Photinia Red Robin in a container, it is a new plant and is around 3 feet tall. Is it ok to remove it and plant in the garden in February? Bill replies... Both my potted red robin photinias get eaten by something that looks like a small green caterpillar in a white cocoon on the new fresh leaves? Bill replies... Between late July and September, take the plant cuttings to your preserving pot. If possible, store them in a plastic bag for maximum moisture loss protection. When you're ready to start planting your new cutting, make the final cut on an angled slant; this will minimize healing of the length of the stem while minimising root attachment.
