About this deal

to 4.7 stars: These stainless steel water bottles are excellent—they might have minor flaws, but we still recommend them. to 5 stars: These are the best stainless steel water bottles we tested. We recommend them without reservation. Lainey Younkin, MS, RD, LDN, is a registered dietitian always looking for ways to help her clients drink more water. She has personally owned many stainless steel water bottles because she can’t stand lukewarm water and loves any bottle that keeps her H20 ice cold for hours.

A 64- to 84-ounce stainless steel water bottle is a great option if you're playing tennis or a sport where you might be in hot weather for several hours and want your water to remain cold. A 17- to 32-ounce water bottle is easier to carry with you during everyday activities, like going to work or the gym.

What to look for in a reusable water bottle

Most bottles on our list have double-walled insulation to keep your beverage hot or cold (more on how this works later). But Corkcicle's Canteen has triple-walled insulation, for even better results. This bottle excelled in our temperature tests, lowering the temperature of our ice-filled water by 5 degrees after six hours. We liked that Hydro Flask's 24 oz Lightweight Trail Series Water Bottle has a convenient handle and a sleek silhouette that fits in most cupholders. However, when we dropped it, the lid almost flew off, and the slippery, shiny finish was tough to hold. The wide mouth opening allows us to add ice cubes, while the spout lid ensures we can sip without soaking our shirts. Combined with the handy carrying loop, we recommend this bottle as your everyday go-to, especially if you work out often and need a basic bottle for the gym.

Drinking enough water has plenty of benefits: “Staying hydrated is key for not only your body’s performance, but also mental clarity and productivity," explains Krista Todini, RDN, a registered dietitian nutritionist. Although the exact amount you should be drinking varies, it's safe to say that adding another glass or two to your daily routine is a good idea for most people. When looking for a stainless steel water bottle, choose one that's well-insulated, in a size that's convenient for you. We researched and tested some of the most popular stainless steel water bottles on the market to find out which ones are truly the best. We also tapped experts, including Todini, for their opinions on which features set the top water bottles apart.Like Corkcicle's Canteen, S'well's Water Bottle features triple-walled insulation—perfect for keeping your tea or coffee hot all morning long. The brand claims the largest bottle can keep drinks cold for up to 48 hours and hot for around 18. While we didn't test the full extent of this range, the bottle did perform well in our temperature tests, keeping our water fresh and cold after three and six hours. Water bottles can range in size from 12 ounces all the way up to 84 ounces (or even more). "When choosing a stainless steel bottle, consider what you’ll be using it for," Todini says. "If you’re active in sports choose a lightweight and slim bottle that can easily be carried, or if it’s your everyday water bottle choose one that fits in your bag or car’s cup holder." The 64-ounce Iron Flask Water Bottle is our favorite large capacity option if you want to space out your refills. (However, we also stand by the other five sizes if you're in the market for something smaller.) We love that it comes with three different caps: a straw lid with a carrying loop, a flip lid, and a stainless steel cap that covers the bottle's wide mouth opening. In total, we tested over 20 water bottles in the Verywell Testing Lab—but not every product scored high marks. Although we liked some aspects of these stainless steel water bottles, each left something to be desired:

Single-walled insulation means the bottle is made from a single layer of stainless steel. You won't find any single-walled bottles on our list because they don't stabilize temperature very well, meaning your water won't stay cold over time.

The verdict: Reusable water bottles

In testing, we found that this bottle didn't keep our water as cold over time as Takeya's Actives or Thermoflask's bottles did. But with only a few degrees difference, we still think it's a solid option. We're also fans of the lid, which has a unique design that's a delight to drink from. Sleek and well-designed, Hydro Flask's Standard Mouth Bottle is our recommendation for a stainless steel water bottle with a wide opening that's easy to drink from. We like that the mouth is the perfect width and features a comfortable lip. The size and shape makes adding ice, fruit, or other ingredients to your water a breeze. But that's not all the lid has to offer. Use one hand to push the button, and it flips open to reveal a two-in-one spout. We love that you can sip from the straw or use the wider opening to grab a big gulp of cold water without needing multiple lids. However, it did not pass our drop tests, denting and leaking after it hit the floor. Even so, we still recommend this bottle as a convenient, mid-sized option with an effective filter. For a stainless steel water bottle that comes with a filter built in, we love this option from Brita. It filters out unpleasant tastes and odors, for fresh-tasting water with every sip. We like that the filter is included at a similar price to most other bottles on our list (although you'll need to replace it regularly to reap the full benefits, according to the brand).
