About this deal

Our panel – made up of 10-accredited spirits experts and vodka-loving consumers – put 20 vodkas to the test. Each was tried neat and blind, to avoid brand bias, then followed by some water to dilute and soften the alcohol and bring out the core flavours. Last but not least, Spirytus Rektyfikowany is a classic Polich vodka that you can’t miss. If you like your alcohol strong, this brand has an extreme ABV of 95%, not for the faint-hearted! Because of its strong alcohol content, we recommend trying it in an infusion or as a base for liqueurs, as it definitely wouldn’t go down well drunk neat!

It lingers nicely on the palate with very well composed flavours next to each other,” noted Gorn, who added that it was “very aromatic, creamy and smooth with superbly integrated alcohol.” Flavoured vodka has increased in popularity over recent years, as they are easy to drink and don’t require much effort as you don’t have to use mixers. Flavours are also highly varied, which means you can mix it up. You may think flavoured vodka sounds the same as infused vodka; however, they are very different. Flavoured vodka is made similar to plain vodka, with added sugar which increases to around 40% during the fermentation process. Any flavour can be fermented within the vodka. Grain Stacey has also appeared in BAFTA-nominated BBC documentary Blood, Sweat & Takeaways, where she investigated South East Asia's food production industry, appearing on both Newsnight and BBC World Service to share her findings.

She was joined by: Matt Chambers, co-founder of the Whisky for Everyone blog, and the North London Whisky Club; and Angelo Sparvoli, head bartender at St James Bar at Sofitel St James. Made from Viognier grapes and Midwestern grains is unusual in itself. The fact that this Californian vodka is also produced in an abandoned Navy hangar gives this drink another facet of style. Many people think vodka is made from potatoes, and it can be, but more specifically, vodka is made from any source of starch or sugar, plus yeast. Because starch is just a long chain of sugars, it can be broken down into sugar with added enzymes. The primary sources of starch used to make vodka include wheat, rye, corn, rice, potatoes, barley and soy. Common sources of sugar include sugar cane, molasses, sugar beets, honey, maple syrup and fruits such as grapes and apples.

There is a slight hint of spiciness from the grains in this Russian vodka, and that only adds to its allure. There was also talk of litchi fruit somewhere in there. Whatever you find in the taste, you’ll have to agree that this is delicious tasting vodka. There are other spirits that are produced that make use of the unbelievably pure glacial water in Iceland, but there is only one distillery in the country, and that means that Reyka is the only vodka that can be properly called Icelandic. It then slowly filters over several days to carefully refine the spirit until it reaches the desired malt barley flavour and character. Koskenkorva is made from the northernmost barley in the world, which provides the best harvest in the arctic climate of the village where the distillery is located. The brand uses custom barley varieties, such as Saana and Elmeri, that have been developed for the short growing season in Finland. Sapling makes eco-friendly living oh-so-easy with its climate positive vodka. On each bottle you’ll find a code which tells you more about the tree you helped to plant, simply by buying a bottle. Last, but certainly not least, is the new, Extra Special Botanical London Dry Gin. The gin is made in Yorkshire in an award-winning distillery, the small batch, hand-crafted Extra Special Gin is made with nine botanicals – including juniper, coriander, orange peel, angelica root, orris root, cardamom and locally foraged crab apple and gorse.

Grey Goose vodka is made with French winter wheat and water from the Cognac region. The classic finish is ripe with hints of spice and is perfect on its own or with a mixer of your choice. The French vodka was one of the first premium vodka to hit the market. Silent Pool has long reigned supreme in the battle of the gins, and now the team has created a British 100% rye vodka. Although fairly neutral, the panel enjoyed a raw almond nuttiness on the nose, that led to clean, fresh tasting pepper on the palate.
