About this deal

Six years ago I once had sand find its way into the middle of my variable ND filter, and to this day, I can still hear the sand grind against the filter. Merging photography and adventure, the Panasonic Lumix TS7 is not only waterproof, dust-proof, can withstand drops and falls from up to 6.6 feet, but it’s also resistant to 220lbs of pressure. You can take it to the beach, but it can also handle the winter months thanks to its temperature-resistant body. The camera has a Power O.I.S (Optical Image Stabilizer), aa 4.6x optical zoom lens (with a focal length equivalent of 28-128mm), 20.4 megapixels, and even lets users capture 4K video. The powerful camera is also creator-friendly and allows for in-camera editing — you can grab 8-megapixel stills from 4K videos — and includes 22 filters, and allows for post-capture focus point changes. Additionally, waterproof cameras can work in conjunction with your phone to shoot photos remotely. While most phone cameras have a timer ability, using a real camera with your phone allows you to set up shots ahead of time.

But, if these aren’t options for you, all is not lost. Unless you’re in the middle of a sandstorm, you can probably get away with using a zoom lens and homemade weatherproofing. Take a plastic bag, cut a hole for the front of your lens, and seal any sensitive areas off with rubber bands. Even as you zoom the lens in and out, you shouldn’t get any grains of sand falling onto the exposed part of the lens barrel. Again, this won’t work in the most extreme conditions, but it’s far better than nothing. If you’re taking pictures in the wind, it’s very easy for sand to damage your equipment. So, take the proper steps to keep your gear safe. It’s worth the effort, too — done right, sand dune photography isspectacular.Panasonic's new Lumix TS7 (called the Lumix FT7 outside the US) is the latest waterproof camera here. As opposed to Olympus, which reduced the resolution of its TG-5, Panasonic has gone the other direction, increasing the pixel count from 16.1MP in the TS5 / FT5 to 20.4MP in the Lumix TS7 / FT7. Lens coverage remains the same as its predecessor, with a 4.6x zoom range that covers 28-128mm, but interestingly, the lens loses its Leica branding. Another option to consider to avoid inadvertently dropping your camera in the sand during a beach shoot is to use a tripod. Attaching your camera tightly (and using a rain cover to protect both the tripod and camera) can offer more protection from the elements, especially if you’ll be shooting where the camera may be subject to spray from the ocean or a waterfall. When purchasing a tripod, make sure that its capacity can hold both the weight of your camera body and your heaviest lens combined. Waterproof, with no housing needed, theHero7 is yet another adventure-ready camera fromGoPro. You can capture video from your summer adventures, with gimbal-like stabilization (without the gimbal!). HyperSmooth video stabilization keeps the shot stead, while TimeWarp video lets you create time-lapses of the settings. With SuperPhoto, the Hero7 will choose the best optimal shot in any situation, all while staying protected from the elements.

Nest Cam (indoor, wired) has a 2MP sensor, 135-degree field of view and 1080p video with HDR (High Dynamic Range) that’s optimized for the clearest possible view both day and night. We added software optimization which delivers sharpness, color accuracy and balance, and dynamic range without washed out whites. It definitely takes some planning to photograph sand dunes. You can’t just go in unprepared, or you might end up damaging your equipment. However, it’s not as difficult as you might think. If the light is right, and you’ve found some good dunes, you’ll come home with amazing photos. NIKON D800E + 70-200mm f/4 @ 70mm, ISO 100, 1/4, f/22.0, three-image panorama Other ultracompact metasurface lenses have suffered from major image distortions, small fields of view, and limited ability to capture the full spectrum of visible light — referred to as RGB imaging because it combines red, green and blue to produce different hues. I normally don’t use a clear filter for landscape photography. This is simply personal preference, but it’s rare to be in a situationwhere I’m especially worried about damaging the front element of my lens. Sand dunes are the exception. If you’re taking pictures in the dunes, and it’s windy, some sand will hit your front element. It might not scratch your lens — there’s no way to be certain— but it’s certainly not ideal, especially for prolonged periods of time. Whether they’re small lakeside enclaves or expansive stretches of white sand at the ocean, beaches are great places for taking pictures. People are having fun swimming, surfing, snorkeling, playing volleyball, building sand castles, or simply relaxing in beach chairs – and the fun factor shows –making for memorable fun photos.

The downsides: Salt spray, blowing sand, high moisture levels, unexpected waves, and the ever-present possibility of accidentally dropping or dunking your camera in pursuit of a great shot. The solution: Opt for a camera designed to withstand all these challenges and more, like one of the 10 cool models described below. Inspiration for the system came after a chance conversation with a colleague who wanted to put a lens on the end of a fibre. Be sure that if you’re using spray sunscreen or bug repellant that you move far away from any camera equipment. Overspray is just as harmful and difficult to remove from lenses and the camera body as transferring it from your hands.

Omenn-Darling Bioengineering Institute Interdisciplinary research on cellular, device and computational bioengineering The researchers compared images produced with their system to the results of previous metasurface cameras, as well as images captured by a conventional compound optic that uses a series of six refractive lenses. Aside from a bit of blurring at the edges of the frame, the nano-sized camera’s images were comparable to those of the traditional lens setup, which is more than 500,000 times larger in volume. Wash Your Camera. If your camera has been exposed to salt water, you’ll want to make sure you immediately wash your camera (it’s already wet anyway!) to avoid corrosion. Salt and other minerals in water can create havoc for lenses and camera components if any residue is left.Diversity Champions Program Learn, share, and practice strategies related to diversity, equity, and inclusion Princeton Materials Institute Multidisciplinary research driving advances in materials science and photonics When using the brush, make sure to hold the camera upside down to prevent any loose sand from falling into the camera body. Gently sweep the brush across the lens surface, starting from the center and moving towards the edges. Be patient and repeat the process until all visible sand particles are removed. In cold and wet conditions, waterproof cameras are much easier to operate. Unless you have special gloves, most phone touch screens make it difficult to take photos without exposing your bare fingers. When it’s raining, most phone touchscreens treat falling raindrops the same as lots of fingers touching all over your screen. It can be quite frustrating to tell your phone to take photos when it treats every falling precipitation as an attempt to focus the camera or switch to a different app. That’s why even though your phone can survive getting wet, it’s no joy to operate a phone in wet or cold weather.
