That’s because Peaberry coffee beans are not limited to a specific type of coffee bean or even a specific region. They can be found in all harvests. For example, Kona peaberry coffee, which is grown on the slopes of Hualalai and Mauna Loa in Hawaii, is one of the most expensive and sought-after on the market. Good question. It’s awesome. British colonists tried to expand the coffee industry in the country, spreading coffee to the West in an attempt to increase production. This attempt was largely unsuccessful— production didn’t increase until much later. While most of these cherries will have two flat beans, there will be a certain percentage of any coffee lot, between 5 and 12%, that will have only one, round-ish ‘pea-like’ seed. This seed is known as a peaberry and is a natural mutation that occurs within most varietals. In conclusion, peaberries aren’t necessarily better than other beans, just different. So if you find a brand of blend that really suits your personal tastes, then hooray! But don’t beat yourself up if you find there isn’t much (if any) notable difference between your got-to and its peaberry counterpart. When we roast, we want all the coffee beans to roast the same amount, all the way through to the inside of the bean. This is known as ‘bean development’ and it is crucial for delicious flavor. However, the only two kinds of Peaberry Coffee you’ll generally encounter are from Tanzania in West Africa or Kona Coffee in Hawaii. You may even find some from other, well established coffee producing regions such as Brazil. The last twenty years has seen the average age of the farmer rise. This is because each of the 0.5 - 2 acres farm reduces as it gets divided amongst the next generation each time. This has meant younger people leaving the area. So, you can imagine, that at those high altitudes and slopes, transportation of the coffee to the processing plants by older farmers has become difficult.
