The Summer Sacrifice is set on No Place Island, the one remaining Island that escaped being destroyed by the Great Goddess in her attempt to destroy mankind. The folklore surrounding elder is wide and often conflicting. It was thought that if you burned elder wood you would see the devil but if you planted one by your house it would keep the devil at bay. Apparently, it could charm away warts and vermin. Oak has a long history of folklore throughout Europe and was sacred to many people, including the ancient Greeks, the Norse and the Celts. Here we have the finished piece, which is five inches wide by seven inches tall and is called Summer Sacrifice. In total it was completed in a little over five hours over two days, but could easily have been completed in a single session.With all the celebration and neolithic celestial alignment that goes on at Stonehenge, there’s no denying that the summer solstice is perhaps the oldest excuse to throw a party going. From solitary witches to groves of druids, most Pagan faiths have honoured the solstice with rituals, feasts, and just a hint of debauchery across Europe for thousands of years. Still moving along with establishing the values and beginning to insinuate details here and there. For whatever reason, the colors I put down felt more intense than I’d have preferred, so I spent a lot of time experimenting with different mixtures to tone down the color intensity a bit. It’s possible I went a little overboard in muting the color, but given how grayish brown everything seemed to be with the wildfire smoke outside, it felt like the right direction to go. Midsommar, for example, is more than just a cult horror movie, it was a national holiday marking the solstice in Norway up until 1771 and is still celebrated in Sweden and Finland today. It is known by the druids as the Goddess Tree and the Lady of the Woods and is associated with light, new beginnings, love and fertility. It was a tree of enchantment with the power to protect against evil spirits and the evil eye. These days, the Goddess stops the spread of evil by sacrificing the Island’s rotten teenage souls. Or so the story goes...
