About this deal

The beer was born when Antoine Bosteels happened to browse through a publication from the local Dendermonde historical society on the subject of breweries that had disappeared from the area.

The word de-us is the root of deity, and thereby of deism, pandeism, and polydeism, all of which are theories in which any divine figure is absent from intervening in human affairs. This curious circumstance originates from the use of the word "deism" in the 17th and 18th centuries as a contrast to the prevailing " theism", belief in an actively intervening God: The brewer does not rely on market research or taste comparisons; rather, he trusts his own expertise and experience. Each beer has to have the wow factor. Antoine Bosteels: “We’ve always said that we would finish up drinking it ourselves if we were unable to sell it.” To be in love with your own beer, what better basis is there for success? And it’s lively stuff when opened. Afterwards, it settles to a pale golden body with a snow-white head that looks remarkably like sparkling wine. The nose is fresh and floral, with apples and citrus in abundance. Sip it; there’s a dry maltiness overlain with apples, hops, ginger, and cloves. It’s zippy, balanced and silky on the palate, with a slightly bitter finish. All this complexity belies a heady strength. By combining a form of deus with the Ancient Roman word for "father" ( Latin: pater, [ˈpa.t̪ɛr]), one derives the name of the mythical Roman equivalent of Zeus: the sky god Diespiter ( [d̪iˈɛs.pɪ.t̪ɛr]), later called Iuppiter or Jūpiter, from Proto-Italic *djous patēr, descended from Proto-Indo-European root *Dyḗws*Pahtḗr literally meaning ' Sky Father'. From the same root is derived the Greek vocative "O father Zeus" ( Attic Greek: Ζεῦ πάτερ, romanized: Zeû páter), and whence is also derived the name of the Hindu sky god Dyáuṣ Pitṛ́ ( Vedic Sanskrit: Dyáuṣpitṛ́, द्यौष्पितृ), and Proto-Germanic *Tīwaz or Tius hence Old Norse Týr. The carriage driver, on a halt, will always have his Kwak to hand in a practical way.

Latin deus and dīvus ("divine") are in turn descended from Proto-Indo-European * deiwos, "celestial" or "shining", from the same root as *Dyēus, the reconstructed chief god of the Proto-Indo-European pantheon. Bosteels wants to set himself clearly apart from the rest and make his own, sometimes surprising, signature mark. “We don’t want anything ‘in the style of....’, that is not in our genes.” Brewing involves a lot of testing, experience gathering, learning from your successes as well as your mistakes. It involves making choices and improving quality with the help of science. It is the only way to produce a beer with a degree of saturation comparable to that of the better sparkling wines. However, DeuS remains a beer. It owes its body to the sugar residues that manage to escape fermentation.

Each beer has its own particular glass and a lot of thought has gone into this. Antoine Bosteels designed the glass for Tripel Karmeliet on a mirror. The beer stops where the points of the lilies are depicted on the glass, giving way to the frothy head. This is how it should be. When is uncorked the ‘plop’ resonates. Bosteels only uses the highest quality corks, you can hear the difference straight away. Latin Deus consistently translates Greek Θεός Theós in both the Vetus Latina and Jerome's Vulgate. Champagne makers usually dissolve about 600 g of sugar in one liter of dosage to make a syrup. We will boil some light dried malt extract (DME) in water instead. You might need about 2.4 L (82 fl. oz.) of dosage and thus Deus ( Classical Latin: [ˈd̪e.ʊs], Ecclesiastical Latin: [ˈd̪ɛː.us]) is the Latin word for " god" or " deity". Buggenhout is also easy to get to using public transport; use the Dendermonde-Brussels line or the train from Mechelen to Ghent. This is essential reading for anyone with an interest in beer as a drinker, a retailer or a brewer." – John Cryne, former chairman, Campaign for Real Ale RSS linksWhatever gave the brewer the idea for this beer? Once invited to a Sunday brunch, where 75cl bottles of red and white wines and champagne were on every table, he concluded that beer was nowhere to be seen. He had to do something about that. The rest is history. But most importantly, the right beer glass or goblet can make a world of difference in terms of appearance, aroma, and flavour. Temperature, aeration, carbonation, head creation and retention, the ability to swirl, and protection from bumps in busy beerhalls: there are countless reasons certain craft beer glasses just make sense.
