About this deal

Do you have that one author where every time you get a new book from them it feels like you’re catching up with an old friend? This seemed a very predictable storyline with not much drama, and I felt the France vs Dorset setting for the main character was not believable. I always read her new books when they come out, though over the years some have not been as memorable as others. Of course, there are cameos from the other key characters and it was a treat to learn more about their ongoing lives.

Some of the dialogue was clunky, and maybe that was something to do with the, unusual for her, 1960s setting (rampant sexism, smoking, short skirts etc etc). Head back to Dorset in the 1960’s where Megs mother Louise invites her to the hotel she’s currently running. The owner of a hotel known as Nightingale Woods has passed away leaving the property to his sons Andrew and Colin and a mysterious third person, much to Colin’s distaste. Andrew’s son, Justin, is only a short distance away so she can ask him if she needs to make any decisions, only problem is Justin thinks Louise is a gold digger and is after his father for money or the hotel.

A Wedding in the Country is about Lizzie, A Wedding in Provence is about Alexandra and One Enchanted Evening is about Meg. Meg longs to be a professional cook, but in 1964 the idea of a female chef running a kitchen is considered ridiculous.

Not wanting to complicate her life anymore, she wants to keep herself busy without relying on others for any help or assistance, instead doing things alone.

Meg had been about to to follow her dream and work at an exclusive restaurant in France, she wouldn't get paid but the experience would give her a good start in her chosen career. Meg and Justin are a brilliant couple, I loved how now matter how hard he tried he couldn’t not love her, not help but appreciated her cooking and admit she was excellent at what she did. Arriving on the literary scene in 1995 with her novel ‘Living Dangerously’, she had published a novel that helped establish much of what was to come later on. In fact, this is the first book of hers in recent years that reminds me of her early novels which I have read many times over.
