My brother, more of a son to my parents than I am a daughter, it often seems, yet he is not my blood. Of course I still read it and of course I loved what I read .. something is always better than nothing ... but I was beyond desperate for more! I am not a very patient person at the best of times and the wait was killing me only seconds after finishing it!

Someone I Used to Know: The gorgeous new love story with a

Festoon lights criss-cross from one side of the courtyard to the other, reflecting in the darkened glass of upstairs windows and casting a warm glow onto the sandy stone walls of the farmhouse and barns. Tealights in lanterns sparkle atop brightly painted metal outdoor tables, and colourful bunting sways overhead, dispersing the ribboning smoke from cigarettes below.

Paige Toon is widely known for her work as a contemporary romance novelist. While I will say this book does contain a romance element, there is more of a life fiction vibe to this tale. With a focus on family, relationships, friendships, children, parenting, love, second chances, the past and trust, Someone I Used To Know crosses common life territory. With an honest and sincere approach to the story at hand, Paige Toon’s latest is an optimistic story that enables us to see that life really is what you make it. But Jamie hurtled into our lives at the age of thirteen and never left. He turned thirty recently and although he hasn’t lived at the farm in almost a decade, he turns up nearly every day to visit my parents. They’d be lost without him. We both start as Alfred, an elderly farmer from the surrounding area, interrupts from a nearby huddle. The old man hobbles over to say hello, unaware that we’re having a ‘moment’. This is a heartbreaking read in many ways, and one that highlights the sheer importance of what people like Leah's parents do. Fostering isn't easy, and neither is being a foster kid, and author Paige Toon does not shy away from showing this to the reader. I also loved that the family home also just happened to be an alpaca farm and some of the mentions of the alpacas. Some of the family traditions, such as the tree, warmed my heart, while other things, like the bit about the wrist warmers most definitely made me giggle.

Okay, maybe this is my second.’ He smiles up at me with his best puppy-dog please-don’t-be-mad impression. ‘You’ve been gone ages!’ Someone I Used to Know will make you laugh, it will make you cry, it’s just one of those fabulous books that manages to stir all your emotions. At sixteen, George is the foster brother Leah never asked for. Beautiful and troubled, he struggles to come to terms with his circumstances even as Leah is drawn ever closer to him. We could have stayed here, but… nice solitary Airbnb vs full house… No contest. It seemed worth sacrificing the return journey time for the peace and quiet. Beautifully written, with natural, fluid dialogue. I was totally invested in Leah, Theo and (gorgeous!) George’s story and honestly didn’t want it to end.

Summary

This book is much more than meets the eye. A pretty cover with so much depth. The stories main focus is around the care system how lives are affected positively and negatively by their upbringings.

Someone I Used To Know - Kindle edition by Toon, Paige

The sound of Theo’s voice causes me to spin around. He looks at the card and then at me, with my rabbit-caught-in-the-headlights expression. I loved this from start to finish! I loved the characters, the alternating of chapters between the then and now and most importantly I loved the alpaca’s! Can I persuade the husband to let me have one in the garden! 🤔😂 me thinks not but a girl can dream! Theo's wealthy family have mysteriously pulled him out of boarding school and he's now enrolled at the local state school with Leah and George. When their worlds collide that summer, the three teenagers form a bond they believe will be unbreakable. But life doesn't always go to plan... In fact if you are already a Paige Toon fan, then stop deliberating and just read the book as its easily one of her best books, full of depths and even had me on the the verge of tears a few time, such was the brilliance of the turn of phrase.I saw the article in the paper and felt compelled to write. I’m sorry it’s taken me so long to get in touch, but I wanted to say thank you for all that you did for me. I’ve thought about you often over the years. I’m doing okay and hope you are too. You look well in the picture. Leah was such an amazing and complex character and Theo and George - well I’ve never loved two guys so much at the same in a book as I did these two! An absolute tearjerker, full of love for the family we're born into and the one we build along the way. This book will live in my heart for a long, long time' LINDSEY KELK
