About this deal

West Ham finished in 16th place in the Premier League with 39 points, their lowest points tally since 2010–11 when they gained 33 points and finished bottom. He came fifth twice, fourth once and was named League Managers' Association manager of the year three times, a feat bettered only by Ferguson himself.

When West Ham were hammered at Aston Villa last weekend, James Ward-Prowse made the eyebrow-raising assessment that it had been “an entertaining game for the neutral”. In his sixth full season in charge, Moyes secured fifth place in the league and reached the semi-final of the Football League Cup as well as the last 16 of the UEFA Cup, eventually being beaten on penalties by Fiorentina.

Pellegrini, with his title-winning credentials from Manchester City and a CV that also included Real Madrid, was felt to be more in keeping with the lofty ambitions surrounding West Ham's controversial move from Upton Park to London Stadium. I see room for things to get better and I think what I have learned can help West Ham to get better as well.

With the money from the Lescott sale, Moyes brought in Johnny Heitinga, Sylvain Distin and Diniyar Bilyaletdinov. Whilst Everton's league form flourished again, their record in the FA Cup under Moyes did not improve: in the third round they crashed out 4–1 to Blackburn Rovers.

Moyes is one of only two managers in the bottom half of the Premier League table to have started the campaign with their current club, the other being Steve Cooper, now on his second dreaded vote of confidence at Nottingham Forest. Some fans at Everton dubbed Moyes "Dithering Dave", criticising what they saw as indecisive management, particularly regarding transfers.

On 14 September, Moyes was sent to the stands by referee Alan Wiley during a game against Stoke City. Had they won at Craven Cottage, the Hammers would have moved up to fourth, a position they occupied for a couple of days last month but one the club have only matched or bettered by season's end once in their entire history - the 1985-86 season when they finished third under John Lyall. Until Jordan Pickford saved from Said Benrahma’s 90th-minute volley, West Ham’s only shot on target had been a mishit cross. Andriy Yarmolenko, Ryan Fredericks, Issa Diop, Pablo Fornals and Fabian Balbuena were on the bench, while other expensive recruits including Felipe Anderson, Jack Wilshere, Samir Nasri, Carlos Sanchez, Lucas Perez and goalkeeper Roberto have left, either permanently or on loan. That plea came after their match against fierce rivals Panathinaikos on Sunday had to be abandoned when a visiting player was hit by a firework hurled from the crowd.Build-up begins for the heavyweight showdown between Anthony Joshua and Jermaine Franklin as AJ starts his route back to the top. Any optimism the home fans had at half-time was quickly hoovered up when Nayef Aguerd gifted Wilson his second goal 23 seconds into the second period. Given the chasm between the clubs, it is easy to forget that at this stage last season, the roles were more or less reversed.

As quoted by the Daily Mail (21 October), Moyes has insisted he is “only focused on the team doing well” at present – rather than a potential extension. Instead, West Ham's supporters can console themselves with the knowledge their team have their highest points tally after 23 games since that memorable 80s campaign - and have now matched the 39 they accumulated in the whole of last season.

His full-time occupation was as a pattern-maker and later a lecturer at Anniesland College in North Glasgow. On 13 January 2018, West Ham registered a 4–1 win away to Huddersfield, which became Moyes' 200th victory as a Premier League manager, he became only the fourth to reach this milestone, after Sir Alex Ferguson, Arsène Wenger and Harry Redknapp. Ugly football does not = bad manager and doing a bad job, WBA is the first job where he looks certain to actually fail to deliver on why he was brought in by a club. It meant he became the first United manager in history to win a trophy outright in his first season in charge. Going back to Moyes did not just underline that profligacy, it also meant rejecting the theory the Scot did not excite the club's fan-base, which was the underlying reason for the 57-year-old's exit in the first place.
