About this deal

Loved the backstory behind each character, wish we got some more detail, but the politics kept it interesting.

His hot breath tickled the back of her neck, sending pleasant shivers down her spine, then he whispered, "I'm terrified. I will admit, however, that Rion - the male lead - was rather interesting and well fleshed-out, perhaps more so than your average romance novel hero. This could’ve been such a nice series had they paced it well and not just rushed through the events to make it a standalone. The small steps they took so he could learn he can trust her was so beautiful I cried for every step he took towards her. But please, I'm begging whoever is in charge of this stuff: give this book the pretty cover it deserves. It has the fae, slavery, discrimination, fated mates, an angsty territorial but gentle male lead, strong female lead, and star-crossed lovers vibes. Arianna is a young female that had to grow from naïve and sheltered to a warrior, capable of defending herself and surviving, and although I never disliked her, my “love” for her only grew with every page! I guess we could say it's a very emotional relationship rather, than a physical one, and while I appreciated the way it was presented, I would have liked it to be a little less intense in its telling and a little more audacious in its showing. I'm happy that so many other reviewers really enjoyed this read, but I do think comparing it as "the next" ACOTAR set it up for failure with readers coming in with those higher expectations.

Fae romance is all the rage at the moment, and since I could get this for free with KU, I took the plunge. I realize that world-building wasn't a priority for this story, as it was much more interested in letting us discover the world as we went and focused on the romance, which is fine, but also left me with a lot of questions. She felt like every colour, constantly spinning, never settling in one place, because this feeling, this love was too strong to be confined to a single colour.

Thank you to the author, J E Reed, for providing me with a free digital copy in exchange for an honest review. There was certainly angst and feelings on either side, but the lack of a slow burn was a detriment to a story like this.Arianna has spent almost 2 years posing as a Half-Fae and hiding that she is the rightful queen of Alastríona as she possesses the power of "The Divine" - Healing. I thought the author did a good job of empathizing the fact that his trauma wasn’t instantly washed away but what was happening. With a secret no one can know, Arianna strives to placate him while plotting her escape, but sometimes fate has other plans and rumors can't always be trusted. I believe this book is considered Young Adult, so just a heads up for anyone, there is no spice in this book (everything is closed door/fade to black) in any intimate romance scenes between the characters.

First of all, I just want to say a grateful thank you to the author for sending me a free copy of this audiobook, I enjoyed most of it a lot! That said, even though I abhor a closed-door romance, an intentionally light "spice" level doesn't inherently take away from the story unless there's also a "light" amount of sexual tension and chemistry in the characters. She graduated massage school in 2009 and has spent the last three years building her small business. It's not the crying and fainting that's the issue - feel your feelings girl, they are absolutely valid - it's just that they felt like plot drivers rather than representative of actual emotion. I also felt like I could guess what was coming and wasn’t shocked by anything that was supposed to be a plot twist. In addition the world building seemed just a tad too similar to some already written, well known, books.
