About this deal

In 2267, the alien Sylvia demonstrated the power to assume the form of a cat. She accomplished this feat with the aid of a device called the transmuter, which was the one element of her wardrobe that did not change shape. ( TOS: " Catspaw") Where did your race get this ridiculous predilection for resistance, hmm? You examine any object. You… you question everything! Is it not enough to accept what is?" This episode marks several changes to the episode credits. From this point on, the episode titles and end credits are in the same font as the main title of the series. Directors and writers are credited at the beginning of Act One instead of the end of the last act. DeForest Kelley's name is added to the opening credits. Also, Gene Roddenberry is credited as series creator in the opening credits. Trek Trivia: In the book Star Trek Cats by illustrator Jenny Parks, Sulu is depicted as a Japanese Bobtail cat.

Later on, Spot played an integral part in saving the Enterprise crew. While Data and Jean-Luc Picard were on an away mission, a synthetic T-cell became airborne and infected the crew and the animals. This caused inactive parts of their genetic code to activate and essentially "de-evolve" them, including Spot. She gave birth to her litter while also de-evolving into a reptile. When Data and Picard returned, they found her and saw that her kittens were unaffected. They realized that the natural defense mechanisms in the placenta, which protect infants from the mother's diseases while in the womb, might prove useful in creating an antidote. This led Data to develop a cure using amniotic fluid from Nurse Ogawa, who was also pregnant at the time. ( TNG: " Genesis")

In 2257, after surviving falling debris aboard the USS Discovery, Jett Reno compared herself to a cat having nine lives, with " five more lives, at least." ( DIS: " Such Sweet Sorrow, Part 2") Individuals of this type were often kept as pets among Humans. Examples of cats kept as pets included Spot, owned by Data, ( TNG: " Data's Day", " In Theory", " Schisms") Neelix, owned by Reginald Barclay, ( VOY: " Pathfinder") and Chester, owned by Liam Bilby and, later, Miles O'Brien. ( DS9: " Honor Among Thieves", " Time's Orphan") William T. Riker and LaForge had bad experiences with cats, but Beverly Crusher and Deanna Troi loved them. ( TNG: " Force of Nature", " Timescape", " Phantasms") The Enterprise’s Chief Medical Officer Dr. Leonard H. McCoy could provide your cat with a great name. Maybe you can toss in a little feline wordplay, like MeowCoy or McCat! Spot was played by unknown long-haired Somali cats in her first two appearances and trained by Gary Gero and Scott Hart from Birds & Animals Unlimited. Spot's appearance was changed into an orange tabby cat beginning with the sixth season when Rob Bloch from Critters of the Cinema took over the animal casting and training. During her time on The Next Generation, Spot was then played by Monster, Brandy and Bud and later also by Tyler, trained by Rob Bloch and Karen Thomas-Kolakowski. ( citation needed • edit) Monster and Brandy were a pair of twin tabby cats and it was they who replaced the first cat to have played the role of Spot. ( Star Trek: Communicator issue 101, p. 15) In "Genesis", when she turned into a lizard, the iguana portraying her was named Willie. Sylvia likes her new sensations, and it's obvious that the interest goes further than their original plan. Wherever these aliens call home, they have nothing like them – and she intends to remain here. Korob reminds her they have a duty to the Old Ones, a fact she considers unimportant in light of her new infatuation.

Although this was the first episode of TOS Season 2 in production (filmed in early May 1967), it did not premiere until the week of Halloween, 1967. It was, in fact, written in a Halloween-type theme for just that reason. This episode also remains to date the only Star Trek production produced as a "holiday special" type episode. a b c UCreative staff (14 May 2013). "You! Be Inspired! – Cat Heroes by Jenny Parks". Caitians were attending Starfleet Academy by the early 2250s, and the Caitian homeworld was a Federation member with members on the Federation Council by 2286. This is the first episode in which a scope can be seen at the engineering station on the bridge. The science station scope was slightly altered for this episode; it is of a lighter color than the science scope used in episodes of the first season and has a circular control added to its left side. This dial control, as first seen in this episode, would remain throughout Seasons 2 and 3. The wizard's robe worn by Korob is the same costume that was previously worn by Bob Denver in the Gilligan's Island episode "Lovey's Secret Admirer", which aired on January 23, 1967.
