About this deal

Though we got cake making from the French, we Americans have created our own repertoire. Notably, we make our cakes light with the use of baking powder (French cakes are mostly leavened with beaten egg white), so our cakes tend to be taller. French cakes are usually little short one-layer jobs anyway, and any cake under 4 inches high just makes me sad. The high egg-white content of French cakes makes a lot of them dry and chewy, so they have to be soaked with syrup before being frosted. The second round is of course the elimination round. And with Steph and Cherry safe and not baking this time, there are just five teams investigating this crime scene and getting their bake on. The baking team eliminated was Emma and Leslie. The uneven layers were their downfall. After all the tears in last week’s challenge, just making the finale was a positive. Unfortunately, the execution let them down. Did the Crime Scene Kitchen winner cake it to the limit with their showpiece? The French idea of frosting basically seems to be something that lies flat so you can decorate it. They have no use for our unruly American frostings -- no cream cheese frosting, no good old American seven-minute icing. And all that piped frosting they do -- forget it. In my book, real men don’t know a star tip from a drop flower tip.

Whoever wins this round, will be safe going into the elimination round. And this is our first opportunity to see how well these bakers can investigate the clues in this kitchen. Crime Scene Kitchen starts season 2 by introducing the self-taught bakers first For the showpiece round, bakers were given a lot of clues for a cake with many components – marzipan, royal icing and a template, whipped cream and gelatin, cake batter, and raspberries. Together, they are the ingredients of a traditional Swedish princess cake, or Prinsesstårta: a sponge cake filled with raspberry jam and pastry cream, stabilized whipped cream on top, and all covered in thin pale green marzipan with royal icing piping and a rose on top.Recently, FoodSided spoke to the pair about their Crime Scene Kitchen win, how they put their pastry training to work and how their Crime Scene Kitchen showpiece wowed the judges. While the FOX baking competition focused on solving the sweet clues, a few elements helped Natalie and Luis rise to the top. Their classically trained pastry skills gave them an advantage from the start. Ultimately, the dessert from the crime scene kitchen was actually an Atlantic Beach Pie (also known as a Boardwalk Pie). This meant Steph and Cherry earned safety in this round and don’t have to do the elimination challenge.

All five teams opted to bake an upside down cake. So once again, it does seem like the teams have been able to figure out what is going on in the kitchen. But are they right? That is the question. Natalie and Luis shared how they put together the concept for the cake. It was meant to be a party. From the top layer with its sprinkles and its surprise center to the middle palate cleanser to the indulgent bottom layer, it was an extravagant feast. Or, as Luis said, “it is a journey through cakes.” Luis: We tried to not discuss it while we were there, but I mean, it didn't help us that round. But at least we know now. Right? Cover ground, get everything possible. I think out of all the groups, I was the first one to actually look in the trash can and take stuff out of the trash cans. I was like, "I'm going in there." I was like, "I'm making sure that I get every single clue possible." Unlike all the other challenges from this season, the Crime Scene Kitchen finale showpiece allowed the baking teams to create their own cake. Instead of solving for the right showpiece, they were finally able to let their creativity shine.Yes, and they definitely learned as they went on in the show. So the first time in the Crime Scene Kitchen, I think they were just sort of gathering all the information they could. Right. And they didn't pay attention to, was it closed? Maybe where was it placed? Was it next to something else? They didn't pay as much attention to that. And they certainly learned to pay better attention. While everyone wishes for the glory and pastry crème, the pastel Thunderdome is unpredictable. Former success does not guarantee that moment in the winning spotlight. Did the pressure become too overwhelming? Did the Crime Scene Kitchen winner shine during the dessert round? The network describes “Crime Scene Kitchen” as a “culinary guessing game,” in which bakers must decode what type of dessert they will be tasked with making. This will be done by them sifting through a few “elusive clues” and tasting the crumbs. Then, they will attempt to recreate the dessert for the celebrity judges, Stone and Gampp, who will determine how close they got to matching the dishes, as well as how good their item tastes. This week, The Merge happened, so we, for the very first time, saw both the self-taught bakers and the professional bakers baking all at once at a chance for the grand prize! Since it is the Crime Scene Kitchen finale, the reality is that the dessert round was going to be difficult. As Yolanda Gampp said, “expectations are high and there is no tomorrow.” These bakers need to bring the boldness.
