About this deal

Destination Düsseldorf may not have the youthful explosion of ideas of Scared To Dance or the strength of concept and production of its two successors, but the obvious vitality, enthusiasm and lack of pretension makes this a more than worthwhile addition to the Skids collection in its own right. With its release date delayed to coincide with the tour of the same name, Robin Boardman finds out if it was worth the wait. Following a prolonged absence, frontman Richard Jobson re-formed the band for a number of live shows, appropriately enough with Big Country’s Bruce Watson and son Jamie replicating the guitar parts, but it wasn’t until the release of 2018’s Burning Cities album that they treated us to new material.

However the hope is that new fans will come along for the ride and love this and discover the back catalogue. The guitar work is strangely reminiscent in turn of Masquerade and Circus Games, either a conscious nod to the past or just something in the band’s DNA – but as the Skids have never tried to emulate others, it’s only fair they should look to themselves for inspiration. We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. As Jobson says of the album; “It feels fresh but never wanders too far from our love of anthems with energy. All purchases of either the LP or CD will receive a free DL which includes the track "Greatest Prize". This is a more introspective track which mirrors the toll that the sheer longevity of Jobson’s career must take; ‘On and on and on it goes, don’t stop, do it again’.

Last Night From Glasgow's own site is best as they have all the formats and different coloured vinyl versions. Following "Destination Dusseldorf" was always going to difficult but "Here We Go Again" with its driving marching drumbeat and sparse guitarwork works is another that has me wanting to dance although the unnecessary coda has me thinking the track has ended and I'm listening to something different.

Rather than attempting to emulate the spiked artiness of debut Scared To Dance, the bold historical statement of Days In Europa or the polished intensity of The Absolute Game, Jobson wisely went with big anthems, stirring choruses, vigorous backing vocals and rousing slogans, and with Destination Düsseldorf, it’s in many ways more of the same. Green Vinyl will be exclusively available at the live launch event and within a few very limited bundles. The more rocking, more complex, more punky "Wings Of Desire" that follows is another cracker and one I want to see live when the Skids support From The Jam later this year; and at about this point on this my third or fourth listening I'm changing my original opinion that "Destination Dusseldorf" isn't as good as "Burning Cities". I was 15 and had never really fell for Punk, I mean I'd been listening largely to Prog for the previous 12 months.
