About this deal

The spin basket had an unusual pattern of cutouts; some are horizontal while others are angled upwards and downwards, which might account for how thoroughly the water was able to pull away from the greens. The spinning action works with a pump mechanism, and the pump handle has a comfortably rounded shape made of grippy plastic. It feels great in the hand and doesn't require much effort to operate, for lefties and righties alike. You're not limited to spinning with this model. After using the colander to rinse an entire box of tagliatelle, we segued it to the table in the brushed stainless steel bowl for family dinner. We also used it to mix pancake batter and lauded its versatility for more than salad spinning. Our one negative comment was after following the manufacturer’s instructions to wash it in the dishwasher, we found water spots all over the stainless steel bowl that took some vigorous rubbing with a clean, dry hand towel to remove. As such, we recommend not washing the bowl in the dishwasher to preserve its beauty and longevity. The four most common types of salad spinners are pump spinners, pull-string spinners, knob-style spinners, and hand-crank (or simply “handle”) spinners. Sommerall says pump-operated spinners are generally the easiest to use, although pull-string spinners are also relatively simple to operate. While traditional salad spinners look like a colander inside of a larger bowl, this space-saving salad spinner is a colander with a detachable handle for spinning. You can move the handle to the side to use to hold the colander so you can strain food, like pasta, in the sink. To use as a salad spinner, simply move the handle into a vertical position and pump it to spin the colander. There are three types of salad spinners to choose from. The one you select will depend on individual preferences.

Jennifer Zyman is a Senior Commerce Writer for Food & Wine and a former restaurant critic with a culinary school degree and over 15 years of food writing experience. Her work has appeared in Atlanta Magazine, Bon Appetit, Eater Atlanta, The Kitchn, Local Palate, National Geographic, Simply Recipes, Southern Living, and Thrillist. For this piece, she tested each salad spinner side by side.Farberware Pump Spinner: This salad spinner performed solidly throughout testing. The pump mechanism was powerful and it dried lettuce well. However, it was hand-wash only and felt cheap. Keep in mind that this bowl has more of a square shape while other bowls on our list are round—it may take up slightly more space in your refrigerator. Meal prep for weekly lunches is made easy with the Farberware Professional Salad Spinner. With 5.5 quarts of capacity in the basket and an almost 7-quart bowl, you can easily wash and dry multiple heads of lettuce. During our tests, we washed and spun two large heads of romaine lettuce and observed there was still space in the bowl for more. It can also be used as a colander for other kitchen tasks, such as draining pasta or washing bulky vegetables. When effectively stored in a salad spinner, lettuce can last up to a week. Spinning off the excess moisture also allows the greens to remain crisp and bright since they aren’t being bogged down by liquid. Additionally, many salad spinners double as an airtight container, which helps your vegetables stay fresher for longer. Pull Cord Spinners: These work just like they sound — simply pull the string to activate the spinning (kind of like a lawnmower). This style of salad spinner requires the least amount of effort, making it a great option for folks with limited mobility or reduced grip. However, the string can be susceptible to discoloration or even breakage with time.

Oxo is a widely recognized and trusted brand for durable, intuitive, and efficient kitchen tools. This salad spinner is no exception. With this model you can easily prep, wash, and dry a large amount of lettuce, strawberries, bulky root vegetables, canned beans, and so much more. With a 4.95-quart capacity, the basket was able to handle enough food for a family meal when we put it through washing and spinning a large head of romaine lettuce, a pint of blueberries, a quart of strawberries, and a pound of cooked pasta. The Oxo Good Grips Salad Spinner is our choice for the best salad spinner because of its efficiency, design, and ease of care. We also love that the bowl can double as a serving bowl, and the salad spinner is available at a fairly affordable price point. What to Know About Salad Spinners Before Shopping Material If you're a big fan of leafy greens and eat salads regularly, it may make more sense to opt for a salad spinner that's dishwasher safe and requires less effort to clean. If you don't have a dishwasher or don't plan on using your salad spinner often, the perk of hand washing means your salad spinner will probably resist warping and last longer. Washing and drying lettuce is one of the most tedious, time-consuming and inconvenient processes we can possibly think of. Cuisinart Salad Spinner: In short: this was too small and rattled a lot when spinning. The hand-turned crank didn’t generate enough power and was harder to use.The bowl of OXO's Steel Salad Spinner is just beautiful: Crafted of brushed stainless steel, it has a beautifully rounded shape and a grippy underside. We'd buy it on its own as a serving bowl…vthe fact that it comes as part of a salad spinner is just a bonus. Salad spinners come in a variety of different material options, the most popular being glass or plastic. Sommerall says he prefers clear salad spinners, such as glass or plastic, for a variety of reasons. The stylish green and white design adds a bit of flair to the mix, and the classic pushdown handle spin method completes the vintage look. The base of the bowl has a nonslip design that allows the user to operate the spinner with one hand.

As the name would suggest, salad spinners work by spinning its contents really fast to remove any excess water and/or dirt. They usually have a removable colander where you can wash your greens before spinning them dry. There are several different mechanisms that a salad spinner might use to spin the greens: OXO Good Grips Large Salad Spinner: This was a solid salad spinner and shared many positive attributes with its winning relatives. It dried lettuce well and could accommodate large portions of greens, but if you’re looking for a plastic model, we still think the speed of the Zyliss is hard to beat. Still, if you're interested in this spinner, it's worth buying.

This salad spinner is the best salad spinner for effortless preparation, and the convenient brake button allows you to stop the spinning instantly. The bottom bowl can even be used as a serving bowl once the spinning is complete. We also love that it’s easy to clean since it’s dishwasher safe. When considering a spinner’s size, Sommerall says it’s important to factor in the amount of greens that will be washed on a regular basis in addition to how often the spinner will be used in general. Coming in a close second, this Farberware pump spinner is another great option. Its capacity is ever-so-slightly larger than the Oxo model (6.6 quarts) and its spinning mechanism takes up a bit less space inside the basin when the lid is on, which creates more room for greens. It’s got a comfortable, easy-to-use-with-one-hand pump, and a rubber ring around the base that keeps it stable as it spins. And for what it’s worth, you get more spin for your pump than with the Oxo — a single pump keeps the device going almost twice as long. And most importantly, the greens come out dry. What we didn’t like about the Farberware Pump-Activated Salad Spinner At more than double the cost of the plastic model, occasional users may not justify the additional expense. This spinner uses a pull-type handle to enact spinning, so it requires more attention during use to make sure the spinning is at optimum level. The spinner is dishwasher safe, making cleaning a breeze.
