About this deal

This is a cheap 4K TV, but one that does manage to upscale lower-res content admirably, while Toshiba's TRU Flow technology ensures smooth, judder-free images for fast-paced sports matches and the like.

And while Toshiba seems partial to the Alexa smart ecosystem (which to be honest is the biggest on this planet), it also has Google Assistant support on some of its TVs, so there’s choice in terms of which smart system you want to go for. Affordable double whammy of Dolby Vision and Atmos So take your time to really understand the sort of product you’re looking for. Think about the sort of features that you need. Which ones are “nice-to-have” and which ones are absolutely critical. If you’re looking for a cheap option then don’t even consider the products that are all signing all dancing because you’ll be paying for features that you don’t need. Choose your retailer wisely As for ports, you'll find three HDMI 2.0 ports that support 4K at 60Hz. One of these ports supports eARC for connecting a sound bar. You'll also find an Ethernet, a digital optical output and a USB port so you connect a multitude of devices.

Eleven’s skin is warm and saturated in the episode, as are the skin tones in an episode of Formula 1: Drive to Survive. The result is a lively – if a bit orange – appearance both in direct sunlight and in the moodier lighting of Hawkins. For audio devices you should use the Audio Link option via the following menu options on the TV: System > Sound Menu. For remote controllers, use the following: System > Options > More > Smart Remote. Select the menu option on your remote, and press ‘OK’ to open the related menu. The UL20’s sound is powered by 2 x 10W down-firing speakers and the results are good. While audio isn’t expansive, it avoids the bunched up feel of the A7500F with good vocal clarity with both male and female voices, some decent panning of effects and all-round good sense of intelligibility. To improve the viewing experience, the TV features both Dolby Vision and HDR10 support which enhances the picture with brighter whites and better contrast between light and dark areas, as well as TRU Micro Dimming and TRU Resolution technologies to improve detail and upscale the on-screen content. Thankfully the Toshiba UK31 does well where it counts – it’s picture performance is excellent when compared to other budget-friendly sets.

Screen uniformity is pretty decent thanks to the use of a direct-lit rather than edge-lit panel but coverage of the Rec.709 colour gamut could be better, with the UL21 only able to reproduce 92.8% of the colour space. Colour accuracy is impressive, however, with all five of the modes achieving average DeltaE error scores below the visible threshold of three. Cinema mode proved the most accurate of the quintet, returning an average DeltaE of 2.59, though Natural mode will likely be the one most people gravitate towards as colours appear more vivid. To test the Toshiba UL21 we used Portrait Displays Calman colour calibration software. Toshiba UL21 review: Sound quality

Smarter than ever before

This review relates to the 43-inch variant in the UL20 line-up, a size that makes it perfect for a second room or a bedroom. Could Toshiba be onto another budget winner? Design – Virtually the same as the U29

Unlike a lot of other inexpensive TVs, the Toshiba UL21 (50UL2163DBC) looks much more premium than it actually is with a slim, sleek and glossy build. It’s not perfect, though. You can’t expect to be blown away by the picture quality like you would be from the best TVs on the market, but considering the price, it does go beyond expectations.

Again the Toshiba 43UL2063DB is less style conscious and more practically minded where build quality is concerned. The chassis is made out of plastic but the quality is decent. It’s not much to look at, but at 43-inches aesthetics aren’t the main concern. If you intend to put the UL20 on the wall, you can do so with a VESA wall-mount (available separately). There are a few different picture modes to choose from which alter the screen settings based on the type of content you’re watching, those include Natural, Cinema, Game, Sports and Dynamic. Natural was the best option for the majority of the content I watched as colours looked overly vivid in the Dynamic and Game modes but then were a little dull in the Cinema and Sports mode. If you’d prefer, you can also manually adjust screen settings like the contrast, brightness, sharpness and colour. Toshiba UL21 (50UL2163DBC) review: sound quality Session token to be used to authenticate requests on behalf of an anonymous user. Session tokens are linked to a client ID (see clientId) What we do like is that the Toshiba 43UL2063DB has gone for a natural looking presentation, eschewing the saturated colours of the Hisense A7500F. Its images are more subtle and refined rather than punchy and vibrant, but still the right side of expressive.

If ‘Device connected’ message is displayed, then the pairing was successful. If the connection fails, retry. The UL21 uses the Toshiba Smart Portal operating system. It’s relatively basic compared to leading platforms like webOS and Google TV, but the interface is straightforward and easy to navigate. Let’s not beat around the bush, if you’re a serious gamer and own a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X, the Toshiba UL21 isn’t going to meet your gaming requirements. Its panel is limited to a refresh rate of 60Hz and there are no HDMI 2.1 ports, so you can forget about next-gen features like Variable Refresh Rate and 4K@120Hz. This shouldn’t be held against Toshiba though, as these simply aren’t features that have made their way into cheap televisions yet.
