About this deal

Jesse, Nadia, and Possum follow Daisy’s lead and are more perceptive to what is going on and when it really matters possess the necessary courage. It’s a parched landscape though, like a tinderbox, drought is felt everywhere, a carless spark could lead to disaster. Jesse’s an appealing protagonist, a thoughtful and capable and police officer, with investigative skills learnt from Danny Jakamarra, the Aboriginal Community Police Officer, whom she works with in Kulara. Along with a stubborn persistence and a casual approach to danger this makes Jesse a loose canon to some, but eventually a grudging acceptance from others as they realise what a great cop she is. A police officer with something to prove, alongside her eccentric father travel to the small town and is determined to get to the bottom of whatever is going on.

However, Jess Redpath – not a local to Canticle Creek – knows Adam and she does not believe him capable of murder. There were sulphur-crested women with orange skin and hazardous heels, feral businessmen with titanium teeth and statement ties. An array of complex, eclectic and engaging characters—greenies, loggers, artists, botanists, underworld criminals and more—people the pages of this novel. But Adam leaves and the next she hears he has been accused of murdering his girlfriend in a small Victorian town and is himself dead in a car accident. Surprised because Adam was a talented artist, yes, he had got involved with criminal and anti-social acts, but that was more small-town boredom than anything vicious.

Australian book releases: Man Booker winner’s latest

I have just finished reading this book,it was a little different from the fiction I usually read but thoroughly enjoyed it. There's plenty of threat, personal and community based, and there's a good supporting cast, as well as fabulous sense of a place.Taking lessons from her offsider who is an expert Aboriginal tracker, Jesse has done well in keeping the crime rates down in her jurisdiction by incorporating her new tracking skills.

After I settled in to the very Australian text which contains slang words that I had to look up - I really enjoyed this book. But Jesse Redpath, a police officer, isn't so sure - she supported Adam, kept him out of prison and can't believe he would do this crime. On a trip to Victoria with her artist father, Jesse digs around and uncovers some contradictions, secrets and truths about the inhabitants of Canticle Creek. As usual, Grafton arses his way through international espionage and political skulduggery he is ill-equipped to handle, and the hunt for his mystery sibling leads him deep into the wilds of Siberia, where a link to the dark and tangled web of Russian history awaits. Tucked away at the end of this outstanding collection of essays is a piece with the marvellous title of The Chook in the Australian Unconscious.
