About this deal

A balanced audio cable has three conductors: two conductors carry balanced signals—one positive and one negative, forming a balanced connection—while the third conductor goes to ground. A twisted pair makes the loop area between the conductors as small as possible, and ensures that a magnetic field that passes equally through adjacent loops will induce equal levels of noise on both lines, which is canceled out by the differential device in the receiver. Speaker cables may be fitted with any of several connectors, including ¼-inch phone or MDP or “banana clip” connectors.

This cable type is longer and accommodates the movement of musicians who use this cable when performing on stage. Meanwhile, a TRS cable is just like the TS but with an added ring that allows two contacts for that balanced right and left audio channel. We and our partners use data for Personalised ads and content, ad and content measurement, audience insights and product development. A differential input looks for a signal applied between the 'hot' and 'cold' sides of the connection, and unlike an unbalanced connection, the cable screen (which is grounded) plays no part in transferring the wanted audio — it's only there to trap unwanted external interference. While keyboard workstations are now supporting XLR connectors, there are still lots of instruments that only support TRS connectors. It is essential to know what application you will be using the audio cable for to deliver the best possible sound quality.

If you don’t have these inputs, or your speakers aren’t individually powered, there is a chance they are ‘passive’ speakers. Since the A input is occupied now, the pedals realises (yes – pedals have feelings too), that a second signal is connected. Star quad cables are effective at reducing electromagnetic interference due to their unique construction, featuring a star-like configuration of four (quad) conductors. The longer your TS cables are, the more likely you are to run into issues with noise and interference.

The name ‘TRS’ refers to Tip, Ring, and Sleeve—the three main components making up the connector’s construction. Telephone lines also carry audio through balanced circuitry, though this is generally now limited to the local loop.

For more information on why I wrote this detailed article and for my latest recommendations of monitor speakers check out this article. This means that much of the electromagnetic interference will induce an equal noise voltage in each wire. The bottom line is – XLR is fantastic for studio recording, and also works well for live performances. While XLR connectors are very similar to TRS connectors, RCA connectors are more similar to TS connectors. If interference develops along the cable, it’s likely to have the same effect on both signals since the positive and negative conductors are in close physical proximity (and are constructed similarly, i.If the noise source is extremely close to the cable, then it is possible it will be induced on one of the lines more than the other, and it will not be canceled as well, but canceling will still occur to the extent of the amount of noise that is equal on both lines.
