About this deal

Pro Tip: If in doubt, always go for the GorillaPod rated one higher than your considered max weight capacity. i.e. even if you own a lightweight Sony a6000, I’d still recommend choosing the GorillaPod 1K, just in case you ever attach a heavy lens. 2. Means of Attachment The other option is to just hold the GorillaPod itself with one hand while you are shooting. If you’re interested in vlog-style videos where you need to walk and talk with a camera facing you, this is a good way to achieve more reach away from your body for more comfortable framing. Again, the BallHead 5K helps here because you can stretch the GorillaPod further out and then rely on the angle-set ballhead to bring up the camera so it’s level. The main thing you need to work out when selecting a GorillaPod is the combined weight of the object you want it to carry. An example set up to attach to the end of the GorillaPod 1K might be the Fujifilm X-T3 with Fujinon 23mm f/2 WR lens – basically any set up with a combined weight of under 1 kg (2.2 lbs).

GorillaPod | Joby

Why? Well because the GorillaPod 5K Kit is the strongest of the lot, and is most likely to be able to provide the securest, most reliable support for any equipment with a 1/4″ tripod mount hole in its base… as long as its combined weight is under 5 kg (6.6 lbs), of course. i) Fixed– the GorillaPod head screws in directly to the tripod hole on the base of your camera. To remove your camera, you need to unscrew the entire GorillaPod. The legs of the tripod can take a little extra time to get positioned exactly how you want them because of their stiffness. However, would you really want them to be any looser and less grabby? There are 2 main factors to consider when choosing a GorillaPod. 1. Maximum Weight of Object(s) to be Supported Another great travel tripod worth considering is the VANGUARD VEO 3GO 235CB Travel Tripod. It’s very light at 1.2kg and still has an adequate payload, more than enough for a DSLR and a host of different lenses. The GorillaPod 500 has been made to support high-end compact and point and shoot cameras, such as the Sony RX100 series or Canon PowerShot G series cameras – anything up to the weight of 500 g (1 lb).

GorillaPod 3K Kit, Flexible Lightweight JOBY JB01507-BWW GorillaPod 3K Kit, Flexible Lightweight

For lightweight compact cameras weighing less than 500 g (1.1 lbs), the GorillaPod 325 is the tiny little flexible tripod for you. With its flexible gripping legs, you can attach it to almost anything, meaning you can get those angles and perspectives that you just wouldn’t be able to get with a regular tripod. It also has a maximum payload of 3 kg, which is actually more than enough for a regular mirrorless camera and lens setup, particularly with mirrorless cameras being a lot lighter than DSLRs. It features a precise 360-degree pan and 90-degree tilt to get the camera at virtually any angle and switch between portrait and landscape with ease. If you’re a professional, or an amateur who really values their equipment, I’d recommend you only look at the 3K or 5K.) The second thing you may need to consider when selecting a GorillaPod is how you’d like to attach it to your camera or other device. The Joby GorillaPod definitely isn’t for everyone, so if after reading this review you feel it doesn’t meet your needs, here are a few other options to consider. However, that’s not to say that the build quality of the GorillaPod 325 isn’t great – it’s just that everything feels that much smaller. Perhaps it’s just my big hands…! More and more I’ve just been going out with the GorillaPod 5K Kit and leaving my full-sized tripod at home. In turn this also means I don’t have to carry my larger camera bag that has proper tripod carrying support and I can just throw the GorillaPod pretty much anywhere in a smaller bag. Each absolutely has their own purpose, but I’m discovering that many times where I thought I needed to bring the bigger tripod were actually in situations where the GorillaPod would suffice. What I Liked You can also get a separate mount to attach your phone to the GorillaPod, opening up possibilities for other content creators too, not just photographers and videographers. That said, the GorillaPod 1K does a fine job in securing devices weighing within its max carrying capacity to thin poles, posts and anything else you can find that fits the bill.

Joby JB01505-BWW GorillaPod 325 Tripod for Camera - Black

One thing to note – even if own a lightweight compact camera such as the Ricoh GRIII, I’d actually recommend you buy the aforementioned GorillaPod 500 rather than the 325, just to give me a bit of additional strength and stability when bending the GorillaPod around objects. In general, if you own a compact camera or anything weighing less than 500g (1.1 lbs), you can opt for the GorillaPod 325 or 500. For the sake of simplicity, I’ve ignored the Video and SmartPhone models of the GorillaPod, choosing to focus on the models most suited for stills photographers.Once you have the total combined weight, you can see how it lines up with the maximum capacity of each GorillaPod. While the legs are available separately, I can’t think of a good reason why you’d want to buy a GorillaPod without the head (which included with the Kit).

JOBY GorillaPod Starter Kit, Versatile Mini Flexible Tripod

If you own a mirrorless camera or DSLR, or plan to attach other accessories to the GorillaPod, the 1K, 3K or 5K are most suitable. From then on, the transition to using the GorillaPod continued as I started to realize how its versatile design was way more useful than I imagined. Before, I would assume a small tripod barely over a foot tall wouldn’t ever be dependable because what if I was in a location that doesn’t have anything to mount it to. What I’ve come to realize is that this scenario happens far less than I thought it would. Yes, the trade-off with the GorillaPod versus a full-sized tripod is precise positioning; I can’t mount my camera five feet away from a fence, but I can mount it on the fence itself. Sometimes that might mean a less “perfect” composition, but honestly sometimes it benefits the composition in ways you didn’t realize when mounting to a fence wasn’t an option, such as introducing great sweeping leading lines to an image. There’s not much more to say about the GorillaPod 500 – it’s a simple bit of kit that allows you to stabilize or secure your compact camera in places that wouldn’t normally be possible. I say ‘combined’, since often you’ll need to take into account a camera body plus lens, or even additional video equipment like lighting, mics, and monitors. For such a small tripod, it’s surprisingly sturdy. It’s designed for premium mirrorless cameras, and it can hold up to 3 kg of weight, which is more than enough to hold the weight of a full-frame mirrorless camera with even a long and heavy telephoto lens. In many instances, it’s just a case of doing a balancing act by distributing the weight evenly so it doesn’t topple over.
