About this deal

As far as the 2021 Legion 5 models go, not a lot has changed in terms of design, construction, and overall feel from the 2020 models ( here’s our review of the 2020 Legion 5). Regardless of whether or not you replace the RAM, this laptop is a solid performer, especially considering the price tag. I can’t exactly fault Lenovo for this either, as it appears to be an industry standard. Andrei found the same issue on an Asus unit, and I’m sure it was the same thing for the Alienware m15 I just had, as it shares the exact same RAM as Jarrod had in his video. So no matter where you look, you’ll probably be facing the same potential upgrade dilemma. Below the keyboard is a large touchpad. It's centered below the keyboard, making it look offset to the left when you consider the number pad. I found its positioning felt natural, and its matte finish allowed for smooth gliding and accurate recording of gestures. You can press the F10 key to disable the touchpad when using an external mouse.

Another added feature to this panel is the fast response time. You have to turn it on though. In Lenovo Vantage, there’s a toggle called Overdrive that will lower the response time to 3ms when turned on. I have no idea what it is with it off, but it is noticeable on fast-paced games for sure. You’ll probably just want to leave it on if you game a lot. I think I can say with some certainty that the cheap RAM is only limited to Lenovo’s 16GB modules and the 32GB models are safe. It can also be noted that there is little reason not to OC your GPU in the BIOS, as it only adds performance and carries negligible changes in temps. When you get to that point, it would be interesting to see QHD panels with RTX 3070 graphic performance comparison between different options. I think this will be popular and of interest to compare 5 Pro 16 inch with Asus ROG/Strix 17 or 15-inch QHD laptops. I am not talking only about gaming graphics, since many people will buy these laptops for dual purposes. The one thing that’s missing on this model is the kill switch on the right side of the laptop, like on other Legion models this year. Instead, there’s a physical shutter on the webcam itself. Better than nothing, but I prefer the kill switch since it completely disables it, including the audio. Battery life I’ve read other reports of middling battery life. I’m not sure how to respond to that though, because I think these results are pretty decent considering the hardware involved. Gaming laptops in general usually have awful battery life, so this is refreshing to see. Perhaps they also didn’t know you could turn the iGPU on – it makes a huge difference. The Lenovo Legion 5 Pro is impressive in games: the 16:10 display offers tremendous quality and immersion, the graphics card is faster, and the keyboard is comfortable. This machine features great connectivity too. It’s occasionally loud, though, and you’ll want to look elsewhere if you want a lighter laptop or a machine with better battery life. With the exception of the 16″ screen, the overall case design and build quality is probably my favorite part of this laptop. It’s just plain excellent. Throughout my use, I didn’t notice any creaks or abnormalities that made it difficult or frustrating to handle. If you’re dead set on getting a 17” screen and like the Legion series over everything else, I’d say this is a good buy at the 3050 and 3060 price points. But if you’re interested in getting the 3070 model I have on hand, I’d caution you against buying this unless you get a decent sale. The thermals are strictly controlled by the Lenovo Vantage software, which you only get three options to choose from. Balanced mode offers the best balance between quiet fans and decent performance. TDP will be allowed to hit 46W, while TGP will hover around 115W. In this mode my fans peaked at 48dB.
