About this deal

Edited and mostly translated by Ken Liu, a sci-fi writer in his own right who is credited with bringing Liu Cixin's Three-Body Problem onto the world stage... The more compelling stories are those that relate to the unpredicted impacts of technological inventions' Bristlefrost • Rootspring • Shadowsight • Bramblestar • Squirrelflight • Ashfur • Stemleaf • Spotfur • Graystripe I was also a little thrown off by "Broken Stars" by Tang Fei - somehow it started off with a girl in school and struggling with friendships, then ended in insanity, death, and forced cannibalism. Uh....

deadhedge on The Secret of the Sul’Dam: Subtle Changes to the Way the One Power Works in The Wheel of Time TV Series 4 hours ago Estrellas rotas» es la segunda antología de ciencia ficción china contemporánea editada por Ken Liu. En ella vamos a encontrar 16 relatos de diferentes autoras y autores chinos; algunos ya conocidos gracias a «Planetas invisibles» o a otras novelas publicadas, pero también descubriremos nuevas voces.I did like how for the most part, these are not just copies or versions of stories from the west. These are inherently Chinese, and I'm so glad to see more of this type of work being translated into English. An awesome read that reminded me of "The Picture of Dorian Gray" due to Ah Chen's obsession with the vision of becoming a successful author and his willingness to do anything to get there.

If you go to this restaurant and you have a better story to tell than all the other guests (who come from different planets), the head cook will personally prepare your food. And the best thing about it: You won't have to pay a dime. When Ah Chen enters the restaurant, Mo, the cook's daughter, instinctively knows that he has the greatest story to tell. And he does. It is the story of a poor, uninspired and unsuccessful author who doesn't flinch from sacrificing his life and his soul for the ability to write an outstanding book that no publisher would ever reject. Ken Liu openly states in his introduction that these stories are selected based on his tastes. There is a variety of some known Chinese science fiction writers, and some new voices. Most of them were new to me as I'm woefully behind on books like the Three Body Problem, among others. There is also an earlier volume of Chinese science fiction in translation that is probably worth the read. I give you a life to live by the warrior code. Remember it well, Brokentail, and let it be your guide. Wiser cats than you or I have lost their way without it.Ken's debut novel, The Grace of Kings, is the first volume in a silkpunk epic fantasy series, The Dandelion Dynasty, in which engineers play the role of wizards. His debut collection, The Paper Menagerie and Other Stories, has been published in more than a dozen languages. He also wrote the Star Wars novel, The Legends of Luke Skywalker. Ultimately, there is still room for ambiguity at the end. Will Darryl and Markey somehow (and somewhat improbably) end up together? Will he kill her or just befriend her? What will happen next. Darktail has a direct kill count of 16, however if we include Raggedstar's 9 lives Brokenstar will have a higher direct kill count. While all these stories can be classified as “science fiction,” they successfully push the boundaries of that category, with some leaning more toward the fantastic and mystical, and others taking the historical or hard sf route. We even learn about subgenres within science fiction that have developed in China, such as chuanyue, which is a species of story that merges time-travel fiction and science fiction (as in Zhang Ran’s “The Snow of Jinyang”). Any AI/robot fans need to read this. Hands down, Xia Jia, you are one of the best short fiction writers in my book.

Now, three years later, comes Liu’s newest anthology of contemporary Chinese science fiction: Broken Stars, which offers 16 more translated stories. It’s a collection that’s just as surprising, exciting, and engrossing as the first. The tales themselves are each one of them a delight. While every reader will have their own personal favourite, and a handful that don’t mix with their tastes, such is always the way with a collection featuring more than ten writers of different styles and perspectives. Lilac, a well-to-do space-age teenager and LaRoux Industries heiress comes across as your typical rich, superficial, and privileged girl. As the only child of the most powerful man in the universe, she must adhere to her overbearing father’s demands and show great care with the relationships she chooses. With her shallow and sometimes outright mean behavior, it’s easy to not find her likable, but in time, the reader can come to admire her bravery and enthusiasm.Vanessa Armstrong Horror Film It Follows to Get a Sequel, Reasonably Titled They Follow 4 hours ago Broken Stars is valuable in the scope of Chinese genre fiction. Literature in China – its publication, regulation, and its very creation – has had a difficult ride. During Mao’s Cultural Revolution, the only book legally allowed to be owned by citizens was his own Little Red Book. You believe that the root of the problem is that each of us lives on a thin, smooth layer of illusions. These illusions are made up from "common sense," from repetitive daily linguistic acts and clichés, from imitating each other. On this iridescent film, we perform ourselves. Marlene wants revenge on her best actress friend and tells Daryl she wants her best friend Sydney (Natasha Loring) to have all her hair ripped out by hand. No problem, Daryl races out, drugs the drinks of Sydney at a bar, follows her home and captures her and pulls her hair out by hand. Natasha Loring sizzles in her few minutes of screen time. Yellowfang: I know you care for nothing, Brokentail. Not your Clan, nor your honor, nor your own kin.

Prior to becoming a full-time writer, Ken worked as a software engineer, corporate lawyer, and litigation consultant. Ken frequently speaks at conferences and universities on a variety of topics, including futurism, cryptocurrency, history of technology, bookmaking, the mathematics of origami, and other subjects of his expertise. Broken Stars is author, translator, and editor Ken Liu’s second anthology of contemporary Chinese science fiction in English translation, and it’s been highly anticipated ever since Invisible Planets was published in late 2016. Like its predecessor, Broken Stars features some of the most accomplished Chinese authors writing in the genre today: Xia Jia, Zhang Ran, Tang Fei, Han Song, Cheng Jingbo, Baoshu, Liu Cixin (whose The Three-Body Problem won the 2015 Hugo for Best Novel), Hao Jingfang (whose Folding Beijing won the 2016 Hugo for Best Novelette), Fei Dao, Anna Wu, Ma Boyong, Gu Shi, Regina Kanyu Wang, and Chen Qiufan. Again, like Invisible Planets, Broken Stars includes essays on the growth and development of science fiction in China over the past few decades. Brokenstar: Those kits were weak. They would have been no use to ShadowClan. If I hadn't killed them, some other warrior would have. I should have killed you when I had the chance. It seems I must have some of my father's softness. I was a fool to let you leave ShadowClan alive! Brokenstar : " Oh, it's true. It's also unimaginably painful to give up the last dying echo of one's life."The sun had fallen beneath the horizon in the east, and the long day was about to end. But tomorrow, the sun would rise in the west again, bathing the world in a kinder light. I give you a life for clear sight. Brokentail, know yourself and your destiny, but know too that destiny can be changed if you choose the right path. Ma Boyong's The First Emperor's Games was a really fun and short story about an emperor who just wants to play video games. Lots of references :) 4*s"
